Unable to connect to ESXi 6 directly via IP from from desktop client

$

I have ESXi 6 set up on a small lab environment of three computers, including the visor.  I am connecting directly to the host via IP (192.168.0.230) from a vSphere 6 desktop client. Note that I am not using vCenter Server in my environment, this is a direct connection to the ESXi host.  This is a new ESXi 6 setup with no custom configuration hosting only a couple VMs, as vanilla and basic of a setup as you can get.

From the first time I tried connecting to the visor I had sporadic connection issues. When attempting to connect to the visor, 9/10 times it does not connect and gives me this error:

"vSphere Client could not connect to 192.168.0.230.  An unknown connection error occurred (the request failed because the remote server took too long to respond). (The operation has timed out.)"

However occasionally it will log me in without a problem (1/10 tries or so), and I can do various configuration tasks for a while before the client finally crashes with a generic Windows error "Vpx client has stopped working".

I can ping the visor from either client without a problem, and I can access the visor's web page by typing its IP address into my web browser from either client as well.  Network connectivity does not seem to be an issue, even among the VMs on the host.

When the VMs are running I can still access them without a problem even when I can't access the visor.

I have tried:

- restarting management network

- restarting all management agents from the DCUI

- installing vSphere client on another workstation

I have enclosed a snapshot of the DCUI log, it has one or two warnings I don't understand.

Any ideas?

ESXI Evaluation question

We've just installed ESXI 5.5 and it's up and running with 1x VM so far.

I was under the impression that ESXI 5.5 was free but I am getting Evaluation messages within the vSphere client software. Can someone advise what happens at the end of the 60days?

Does 5.1 work the same way?

VSphere / ESXi 6.5 AHCI performance problems with native driver / FIX

$

Im having performance problems when using the new VMWare native AHCI-driver on several hosts (Intel Avoton and also Xeon 1225 V3 System (HP Ml310e gen8)).

Using SSDs on those systems - im not sure if it also affects HDDs.

Moving back to the legacy vmklinux AHCI-driver fixes the problems.

See this blog post:

NXHut - IT and Windows - News: Fix slow disk performance (vmw_ahci driver) in ESXi 6.5

I hope this gets fixed soon so I can move back to the native drivers

HP Proliant DL380 G5 . Host does not support passthrough configuration

Hi

I need to attach a tape drive to an HP Proliant DL380 G5 running VMware ESXi 5.1.0

Under vSphere Client . Configuration . Advanced Settings . Configure Passthrough... is greyed out

detail: Host does not support passthrough configuration

I have succeeded on doing this for a Proliant DL160 Gen8.

Can the host be enabled to support passthrough configuration?

If not, is there an alternative please?

vSphere 5 Licensing

$

0

I took a minute to read the licensing guide for vSphere 5 and I'm still trying to pull my jaw off the floor. VMware has completely screwed their customers this time. Why?

What I used to be able to do with 2 CPU licenses now takes 4. Incredible.

Today

BL460c G7 with 2 sockets and 192G of memory = 2 vSphere Enterprise Plus licenses
DL585 G7 with 4 sockets and 256G of memory = 4 vSphere Enterprise Plus licenses

Tomorrow

BL460c G7 with 2 sockets and 192G of memory = 4 vSphere Enterprise Plus licenses
BL585 G7 with 4 sockets and 256G of memory = 6 vSphere Enterprise Plus licenses

So it's almost as if VMware is putting a penalty on density and encouraging users to buy hardware with more sockets rather than less.

I get that the vRAM entitlements are for what you use, not necessarily what you have, but who buys memory and doesn't use it?

Forget the hoopla about a VM with 1 TB of memory. Who in their right mind would deploy that using the new license model? It would take 22 licenses to accommodate! You could go out and buy the physical box for way less than that today, from any hardware vendor.

Anyone else completely shocked by this move?

Transport (VMDB) error -45: Failed to connect to peer process

Hi,

I am using ESXi 5.5, build 1281650.

I am having the problem of not being able to start any VM's without getting the following message

Transport (VMDB) error -45: Failed to connect to peer process.

Failed to power on '/vmfs/volumes/51a6288d-06384dd1-6fd5-089e01a03cd5/test/test.vmx'.

There are currently 5 VM's. 1 of them is running and it is fine, but I am afraid to turn it off worrying it may not come back up again.

The above error happens even when i create new machines.

I have in total 3 of these ESXi installation, all running on the same build and same hardware.

Only difference that I can see right now is that int he server summary under Genreal there is no Image Profile, it is blank. My w other working servers show ESXI-T.T.0-1331820-standard. I do not know if this means anything

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Alert Host IPMI System Event Log status.

$

0

I have a VMware cluster running on a blade server and all but one of the HOSTS report this error     Alert Host IPMI System Event Log status.   I did a Google search and came up with this fix  VMware KB:    The Host IPMI System Event Log Status alarm is triggered repeatedly in VMware vCenter Server 4.x and 5.x …  In step  4  i get this    The system event log is empty.      Any help with this would be great.

Resolution

To determine why the log has filled up, investigate the hardware.

To resolve this issue, stop the alarm from triggering repeatedly and clear the IPMI System Event log and reset the sensors.

To clear the log and reset the sensors:

  1. Open vCenter Server using vSphere Client.
  2. In the vCenter Inventory, select the ESXi/ESX host.
  3. Click the Hardware Status tab.
  4. Click System Event log under View.
  5. Click Reset EventLog. The red alert is removed from the System Event log.
  6. Click Reset Sensors to reset the host sensors.
Introduced in ESXi 5.1 Update 2 (Build Number: 1483097) and ESXi 5.5 Patch 1 (Build Number:  1474528), there is a new localcli command line to clear the IPMI SEL logs:

localcli hardware ipmi sel clear
To execute this command on the ESXi 5.1 or 5.5 host:
  1. Connect to the ESXi host via SSH. For more information, see Using Tech Support Mode in ESXi 4.1 and ESXi 5.x (1017910).
  2. Execute this command:

    localcli hardware ipmi sel clear

Datastore Usage on Disk Alarm?

$

0

I setup the defualt Datastore Usage on Disk alarm to email when it triggers.

Now my understanding of the alarm is, if Datastore uses more than 75% of its space it will trigger then email me.  Actually 75% to warn, 85% to alert.

The alarm triggered. as one of my datastores actually is using above 90% of the space.

But the email confused me

Target: Sata_Datastore
Previous Status: Gray
New Status: Red

Alarm Definition:
([Yellow Metric Is above 7,500KB; Red Metric Is above 8,500KB])

Current values for metric/state:
Metric Space actually used = 9,617KB

Description:
Alarm 'Datastore usage on disk' on Sata_Datastore changed from Gray to Red
It says above 7500KB, actual used is 9617KB.
Is it just giving me wrong info, where the 7500kb should be percent?  or is the Datastore usage on disk mean something other than what I thought?
Thanks
Mike

Hi everybody!

I'm experiencing curiously a problem with our ESXi 5.1 hypervisor. When we power up the server, it's stay available to accept connections, run VMs, edit ESXi config and etc. When we power up a VM from the server, after few minutes ( 18... 25... 27 min ), the server crashes displaying the Purple Screen. I've searched on the web about the problem but I cannot found anything around this. Could anyone help me?

Rufus (free utility) takes 2 minutes to create a bootable USB flash drive for ESXi installation boot source that becomes the install target, even for 5.5

$

0

Just an FYI, one of those rare Windows open source gems that are getting increasingly hard to find on the web these days, amidst a see of downloader payloads.

I've found Rufus to be very handy for quick creation of USB flash drive you can boot from, then install to, for ESXi, no command line stuff to memorize needed, and very quick:

TinkerTry.com/rufus-takes-2-minutes-to-create-a-bootable-usb-flash-drive-for-esxi-installation

works great with ESXi 5.5 too:

TinkerTry.com/download-vsphere-5-lab

and when done with that flash drive and you want to use it for something else (but normal reformatting doesn't work), it handles that too, even on Windows 8.1:

TinkerTry.com/rufus-lets-you-quickly-and-easily-reformat-an-esxi-usb-flash-drive-back-to-full-capacity

Particularly handy for folks getting started who shy away from VMware's Linux procedure:

Format a USB Flash Drive to Boot the ESXi Installation or Upgrade

vSphere 5.5 Documentation Center

or potentially dangerous Windows diskpart commands. Really just fast and useful for pretty much everybody.

Downloaded ESXi 5.5 this afternoon and burned a CD to upgrade my ESXi 5.1u1. But after the installer loaded, it prompted me that ESXi can not detect my network adaptor...

It works just fine with ESXi 5.1u1...Maybe I downloaded ISO wrong...

Hey,

has anyone got the LSI SMIS provider working with ESXi 6? The LSI support site only lists downloads for 5.0 and 5.x. I tried both, but when I try to discover the host with MegaRAID Storage Manager, I'm unable to find it.

Maybe I'm missing something?
