Invalid Configuration for device "11"

$

I've been reading a lot on invalid configuration for devices 0, 1, and 4, but my error is on "11".  It happens when I create a new VM based on a snapshot of an existing.  My question is, how do I know to what device the error is occurring?  That would at least help me troubleshoot where the issue lies.

I thought it was due to the fact that I had a floppy image attached, since that was the 11th device from the top of the list.  But after disconnecting the floppy, and later removing the floppy drive complete, device 11 still eludes me.  Any help would be great.  Thanks all!

I'm getting these errors when trying to kill a VM's process in the SSH interface connected to my ESX host.

Is it safe to delete .vmsn files?

We have a VM that has previously experienced snapshot failures. That problem has been resolved via great advice here:

http://communities.vmware.com/message/2015057#2015057

Now there are a lot (534) vmname-Snapshot???.vmsn files. If this Virtual Machine currently has no snapshots in the Snapshot Manager on the vSphere Client, is it safe to delete these files?

Orphaned vmdk files

Hello all,

I have recently started in a new position and have a dilemma.   I know I have some .vmdk files that are orphaned but I don't know which ones.  Last week I came across a 250GB .vmdk in a shared datastore.  The modified date is from 7 months ago so I don’t think it is being used.   I have cross-referenced the file name to any VM name in vCenter and it is not connected to it anything close to what I searched for.   But I have found VMs connected to .vmdks with completely different names than the VM so I can not be sure if it is connected.

So my question, is there any way to find out what [if any] VMs are using this file without going to every .vmx file and looking manually?

Thanks,

What can I do with unused vSphere licenses?

Our previous IT admin purchased some vSphere Standard Edition licenses (4 processors worth) for a planned expansion that never happened. Due to variety of factors we never ended up using these licenses and don't have any plans to use them in the future either.

Our SnS subscription is up for renewal and renewing the SnS contract for these unused licenses will be about $4k. I am planning on letting the SnS for these licenses to lapse. Is there any penalty or issues I should be aware of before I let the contract expire?

Can I sell these licenses (not likely I bet, but who knows)?

Any issues with migrating VMs to different CPU?

I am going to migrating some VMs (version7) to another host temporarily.

The temporary host is running an Intel Xeon E5410 2.33GHz (8-core) with 32GB RAM.

The current host is running an AMD Quad-Core Opteron 8378 (16-core) with 132GB of RAM.

My only concern is that is there any issue with migrating VMs from a host running AMD onto a host running an Intel?

If I have to create a temporary cluster, is this going to be an issue?

Or should I just import them into vCenter and migrate the VMs that way?

SNMP on ESXi4.1?

I know that SNMP is a feature that we can enable in the standard host version of ESX4.1 but is it available in the ESXi4.1 version?

NFS datastore on a Guest VM

Hello,

i have VM on local SATA datastore. On a Windows 2008 R2 VM i've installed file services and configured NFS so i exported one VM drive to a ESXi host over NFS. The problem is when i start cloning some other machine or copying it to this datastore it fails every time.

I found in log that ESXi host looses network connectivity to the NFS datastore. Since everything is inside same host a on a same virtual switch it doesn't make much sense how can host loose connectivity to NFS.

This is from the log:

Can't start master VM after linked clone pool is created

Using ESXi 5.1, I've created 3 separate floating linked clone pools of 10 clones apiece. Everything works fine until I try to power on the master after the linked clones are available. I get an error:

Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/volume/vm/vm-000002.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

It has done this 100% of the time. No exceptions. I have manually loaded a flat Windows 7 x64 base system and converted a x64 and an x32 using the P to V converter. All systems do exactly the same. All files are where they say thet should be.

I can attach whatever files are needed. Just need some help. Destroying my master and recreating it every time I compose the linked clone pool just seems like overkill.

The VMware ESX server does not have persistent storage

Hi, we have an HP Proliant ML350 G6 with a p410i RAID controller. The raid was created using 4 1TB disks, as this:

Disk 1: RAID 0

Disks 2-4: RAID 5

The server is running ESXi 4.1 since 2011 without any issue until yesterday.

What we did was installing two new SAS disks, and created a new logical volume using the HP ORCA Setup. Then, when we tried to reboot, the server was trying to boot from the new disks, so, we removed the new disks and deleted the new logical volume, the other two where left untouched.

When we booted again, entering into viClient, in the configuration tab, theres a big "The VMware ESX server does not have persistent storage" label. And I can't access any VM, nor datastore.

From command line, if I do fdisk -l it doesn't show anything.

I've attached my /var/log/messages file for you to check it out.

Does anyone know what can I do to get access to the disks?.

The virtual disk is either corrupted or not a supported format.

I use Veeam Backup & Replication to backup our VMs and I've been having an issue backing up 1 VM for the past week or more. It has always backed up with no issues in the past and all of my other VMs are backing up just fine. However, after less than a minute, this VM always fails and I get an error that says, "Creating VM snapshot | Error: A snapshot operation cannot be performed." Trying to rule out Veeam as the issue, I just tried creating a snapshot of the server in vSphere and I got the error, "The virtual disk is either corrupted or not a supported format." After looking around, it appears that error usually has something to do with a correct snapshot or an issue after trying to delete a snapshot but this is the first one I've ever done, so I don't think that's the issue. Anywhere else I can look?

Thank you.

ESXi 4.1.0-Patch download via wget

Hi Forum,

I found several posts regarding downloading patches via wget but none seems to help with my issue.

I used wget for quite some time now to download the patches like this

wget --no-check-certificate https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/OFFLINE/release-385-20130425-559583/ESXi410-201304001.zip

But since MyVmware from now on forces you to log in with user name and password this does not work anymore. I can get to the patch download center and copy the link (which nowadays contains a lot of dynamic parameters and wget just quits with the message

wget --no-check-certificate https://download2.vmware.com/patch/software/VUM/OFFLINE/release-396-20130726-531171/ESXi410-201307001.zip?HashKey=

Any idea how to get around this? Currently I can only download the patches on a machine with a GUI and a browser, upload the patch file manually via FTP to ESXi.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you in advance,

Henning

Timekeeping best practices with Windows on ESXi4

$

Is there a de facto standard to how timekeeping is configured in Windows in a VMware environment? Is the traditional method of having a domain controller synchronized against an external source and all other internal servers/clients synchronized against that domain controller the most used method? Or is it better to keep the hosts synchronized against an external source with NTP and configure all VMs to synchronize against the host with VMware Tools?

What are your thoughts on this?

Best way to connect a SAS Tape drive to a Guest?

I am planning to connect a SAS tape drive to a VM in our ESXi 4 server (on certified hardware).  I expected this to be trivial, but as I researched the proper way to do it, I found a lot of confusing info, including some who claim it doesn't work at all.

So what is the proper way to connect a SAS Tape drive (LTO 4) to a Guest on an ESXi host, given these facts:

  • VMDirectPath is not supported on the AMD processor model in use (because ESXi4 insists on IOMMU use)

  • Performance of the tape transfer is important and needs to be stable for production use

  • This is a tape drive, NOT a tape library

  • I am not asking about backup software, that is a separate issue

And these rumors (unconfirmed):

  • SCSI pass through to tape drives has problem

  • Finding Tape compatible SAS controllers (not Disk SAS controllers) on the HCL is amazingly difficult

  • Some people suggest getting an iSCSI to SAS converter and putting it on one of the 1Gb Ethernet ports, but I have seen no good suggestions for reasonably priced iSCSI to SAS converters

Free backup solutions for VMware ESXi?

I would like to back up the VM images from one datastore to another with the aim that I can just start it up in VSphere if the primary one falls over.  The backup process needs to take place once a day and seamlessly without shutting down the VMs.

Are there any free solutions which can do this for me?

ESXi 4.1 management + vMotion LAN (best practice?)

Am just in the process of setting up some new ESXi 4.1 hosts (Dell R710's with 6 NICs each).  We are using shared SAS for storage, so I don't need NICs for iSCSI.  Was thinking I would set up like this:

2 x NICs for LAN segment  (e.g. 192.168.100.0/24)

2 x NICs for DMZ segment (public IP range)

2 x NICs for vMotion/vmKernel VMLAN segment (e.g. 10.10.10.0/24)

All these physical network segments will be tied together by our Cisco router (we will not be using VLANs).  My questions concern firewalling and the IP addresses to give:

(a) to the ESXi hosts; and

(b) to our vCenter server

Am I right in giving both my ESXi hosts and my vCenter server addresses in the 10.10.10 range?

What ports will need to be open between my LAN and the VMLAN so that we can access everything whilst keeping the VM stuff relatively secure?

ESXi vSphere client missing most icons in home screen

I'm trying to install the license for my ESXi server, but my home page only shows 3 icons - Inventory icon, under administration, and Roles and System logs only under administration.

If I understand correctly, there should be a licensing icon of some sort (in fact a lot of screenshots I've seen of the client has a TON of icons.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hello

I like to know if ESX/ESXi 4.0 or 4.1 runs on the following intel VT Enabled processor: i3/i5/i7 or QuadCore ?

I have 2 boxes that run i7 and QuadCore. I want to install ESX/ESXi 4.0. or 4.1 but I am not sure the version support the host processors?

Thanks for your help

Minh
