ESXi 4.1 Crash Error:

$

Hello All,

I'm somewhat new to VMWare when it comes to the purple screen errors. Last night, my ESXi Server had crashed displaying the screen attached. I had a similar problem about a year ago and paid for support. Turns out the Areca RAID Controller Firmware and Network Cards Firmware needed to be updated. Now, I have this issue and not sure what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The IT Admin before me custom built this server which is a SuperMicro X8DTU board.

APC UPS shutdown support on ESXi 4?

$

We are currently using VMWare Server v2 to run our VMs, but are looking to migrate to ESX.  I have installed ESXi on a test server to see if it will work out for us.

We live in a country where the power is not "ultra reliable", so the power goes off on a regular basis.

All my V2 hosts have APCs connected, with a USB connection to the machine.  The host will shut down if the battery level gets down to 30%.

Can I do the same thing with ESXi?

Thank you in advance-

Joe

Lost connectivity to storage device and all vm become unknown

$

hi:

we use lsi 20320ie pci-e ultra 320 scsi card to connect external disk array. we install esxi 4.0 and vm images to the disk array. we seperate one channel of the disk array to two luns. first lun install esxi 4.0, and second lun to store the vm image.

all are fine until last month, one esxi 4.0 complain about "Lost connectivity to storage device".

it tried to reconnect again and again every second, but can not make it success. and all the booted vm became "unknown". even after reboot, they are still "unknown". only the vms which is not booted at the "lost moment" survive. other vms in the lun seems locked and can not access. I need to delete the lun and format it again.

we have three real machines with  disk array and it happend 4 times these two monthes. it seems hap

pened after patch "ESXi400-201002001" at March. we also apply April "ESXi400-201003001", but it still h

appened.

we notice when the disk array have some delay(like some disk read error), the scsi bus will reset and esxi will show "lost connection" warning. it may recover soon after several seconds, but if the first recover failed, the rest recover won't success any more then all booted vm died and became "unknown".

when esxi compalined about failed recover, the root lun on the same scsi channel is fine. and the other channel which runs linux with the same type scsi card is fine.(our scsi disk array are dual channel, and we divide it for two real machines). so it seems there are some problem of the "mptspi" scsi driver in the esxi. but I don't know the real reason.

thanks a lot for hint and help!!

I have a Netgear ReadyNAS 1100 NAS

where I have set a NFS share so I can add a Datastore on my ESXi 4.1, I

used the following instructions in their site: http://www.readynas.com/?p=3030

Every

time I try to attach the NFS share through the GUI i get the following

message: "Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to complete

Sysinfo operation.  Please see the VMkernel log file for more details."

I

have also tried through the SSH console by using the command:esxcfg-nas

-a -o 10.0.0.10 -s /share/mynfs mynfs and I get the error:

"Connecting to NAS volume: mynfs

Unable to connect to NAS volume mynfs: Unable to complete Sysinfo operation. Please see the VMkernel log file for more details."

This seems to be working but it's kind of tricky even by Cacti standards. Basically if you have any sensor data showing in the "Health Status" screen, this script should be able to find, record, and graph it over long periods of time (in my case the server has an IPMI board). Read the setup directions.

Bonjour,

According to this kb, http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1037671 is solved under ESXi 4 Update 1, and my host is this version but produces these errors. In the same KB, appoints to another kb, http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003490 and as a work around restart management agents can resolve this problem ... But my ESXi is not connected to any vCenter server and doesn't shows me this option.

Is this a bug?? Is it possible to resolve this problem.

Many thanks.

Load balancing with Dell Switch

Hi all,

Don't know if anyone has got this working or knows what issue we might be having.

Basically we have an ESXi 4 host, with 2 network adapters in it. We have one connected to a Dell Powerconnect 5448 switch and the other unplugged.

We decided to test aggregation and connected the other port to the same switch. We then set both adapters in VMware in the same vSwitch as Active and changed to "Route based on IP hash".

We then added a LAG to the Powerconnect switch.

However, we then couldn't see the host anymore.

We tried changing the Mode from LACP to STATIC too but we still couldn't see the host.

I've read alot about stuff and I'm beginning to wonder if the Dell Powerconnect 5448 can even do the "Route based on IP hash" method...

If this is not possible - what other option would work? Basically the ESX host connects to about 3 datastores with different IP addresses. At the moment all traffic to the datastores dumps through the single adapter and the adapters is regularly running at full capacity 1Gbps, so we want to balance the access to these 3 different datastores accross the 2 adapters.

All help is appreciated, thanks!

ESXi 4.1 update 1 - UpdateManager and esxupdate fail

Hi,

I'm trying to complete the last piece of configuring my new hosts and that is getting UpdateManager to update my hosts. Unfortunately I am receiving these errors.

On one of the I receive:

The host returns esxupdate error codes: 10

another I receive

The host returns esxupdate error codes: 99

If I try via esxupdate, I receive:

var # esxupdate -HA
Unable to set up logging:
Encountered error: OSError
Error message: [Errno 17] File exists: '/var/tmp'
/var #

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I did find this article http://communities.vmware.com/thread/303953

but unless I am grossly missing a fix, It is not working for me. I see the piece about /var/tmp being a link. but they also mention doing something to the esxupdate.conf, but they do not say what...as far as I can see. I could be grossly wrong though.

Anyways,  I am hoping someone has seen this and can share thier wisdom...

thanks

Keyboard doesn't work when connecting to a VM with RDP

Sorry, this could get quite wordy as I attempt to explain our situation.............

We have a problem with a couple of our VM's - one XP SP3 and the other Vista SP2 - both of which live on an ESXi4.1 U2 host.

Both machines had their disk sizes increased - the XP *.vmdk files were copied to a PC running Workstation 8 where we ran "vmware-vdiskmanager -x" against them, then they were copied back to the ESXi host.  The Vista VM was just powered off, then the disk size was increased from the vSphere client.

After powering both machines back on via the vSphere client, we were able to connect via the console and check the disk sizes (on the Vista VM, we used Disk Manager to expand the volume).  We then told the users that they could RDP to these machines and continue their testing (these VM's hold a copy of IE6 - XP - and IE7 - Vista - that we maintain for web app testing).

When the users connected to the machines using RDP - our desktop PC's are all Windows 7 SP1, some x86 and some x64 - they were able to use the mouse, but the keyboard did not work....at all....unless....

If you thrash the keyboard and type 15-20 random characters in one go, you get some of them on screen, but as soon as you slow your typing rate below 5 chars per second (!!), the characters stop displaying on screen.

We've tried everything we can think of to sort this out including, but not limited to:-

Removing VMware Tools, rebooting, re-installing VMware Tools

Removing VMware Tools, rebooting and leave the Tools uninstalled

Moving the VM to another datastore and/or host

Tried connecting from other platforms (XP desktop, 2008 server)

Used different network cards on the VM (E1000, Flexible, VMXNET3)

Migrated the XP VM (with VMware Converter 5.0) to PC running Workstation 8

NONE of the above troubleshooting steps had any impact on the problem!!!  In every case, the mouse was still working, but the keyboard was completely unresponsive.

Can anyone suggest any other steps we can try in order to solve this - as far as we know, both of these VM's were working fine before we extended their disks, but we didn't think to try RDP'ing to them before we did so.....

We've built a replacement for the Vista VM as this was needed for some urgent testing, but we would really like to get to the bottom of this to either stop it happening again......or to be able to fix it when it does!!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone has seen/fixed this before

Mark.

VMWare Tools seems to lock 75%+ of available memory

$

I am running ESXi 4.1.0.  I have a number of 2k8 R2 machines running on this server.

What I've noticed is that some, not all VMs are using 75%-95% of the available memory.  When I look at the processes running, it's very minimal with nothing really using anywhere near that much memory.  I used  RamMap to try to try to see who was the hidden culprit.  RamMap showed that "Driver Locked" was using 4-5GB of memory.  (As shown here in another site thread)

http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/Windows_Server_2008/Q_26259037.html

Upon further research, I found some people said this was related to VMWare Tools.  Sure enough, as soon as I uninstalled VMWare Tools from the VM the memory went to where I would expect, and "Driver Locked" went to almost nothing, and eventually disappeared.

I installed VMWare tools with an upgrade when I converted the VM.  Of the maybe 12 VMs I think 3-4 are experienceing this.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I have an Essentials 4.1.0 ESXi installation runing on an Intel S5500BC server.  I installed an Intel ET2 quad Gig nic and it is not showing up.  I initially tested the nic in a similar chassie and it worked fine (was running ESXi 5.1 fyi).  I tried the card in 2 pci express slots and neither showed up.  On the test system I just installed the card and it was visible.  Am I missing something?  The card is an approved product.  Thanks in advance for the help.

Installing iLO on a VM

Hello,

Is it possible to install an iLO on a VM? I'm thinking not as this is only available on a HP BIOS but if people have ideas I'd appreciate their thoughts.

The whole reason for doing this is that we need to remove anti-virus software to install Nice Sentinel software and we can't do this while this is on the LAN but if people have ideas on this I'd be happy to hear them.

Thanks,

David

Thick to thin provision in ESXI

Hi there,

I have a VM server that has run out of space on the datastore, i have put another raid into the server and created a new datastore. I need to migrate the new machine to this but want to thin provision it.

I see you can SSH to the VM server and use this command vmkfstools –i hard-diskfile-thick.vmdk –d thin hard-diskfile-thin.vmdk

however it says that i have to locate the folder it is located in first, i dont know my way around SSH very well and some real basic step by step guide would be great! The other thing that I have not been able to find is how to provision it to another datastore, in my case DS2

Thanks in advance
