Bridge/NAT networking option missing in ESXi 6

$

For years I had been running ESXi 3.5 on a server of mine.  Recently, I formatted the server and installed ESXi 6.  A fresh start with new virtual machines.  When I went to create a new virtual machine, I was not asked what type of network connection I wanted (bridged/NAT/Host-only/etc).  Instead of I was only given a network label drop down.   I did not have this issue with ESXi 3.5 when running on the same hardware.   I really need my virtual machines to use Bridged Networking. Any ideas what the problem is?  How I can get these options back?

See files attached.

Notes:

  • When using VSphere 6.0 I get a "Restricted Virtual Machine Settings" message (See attached image)
  • I have connected Workstation 10 & 11 to the ESXi server but still don't get the option when creating/editing a VM
  • I am running ESXi 6.0.0 Build 2494585 and vSphere Client 6.0.0 Build 2143706
  • I have this issue regardless if the server is running in evaluation mode or a free license.
  • I have tried creating new virtual machines using the following Virtual Machine Versions: 4,10,11
  • My virtual machines Windows 7 64-bit
  • I have tried setting the network connection adapater to VMXNET 3 and E1000

Many thanks for your help

Cannot download Vsphere Hypervisor 6 (free) - download link does not work

This has been happening since at least Saturday, and others have reported this as well (in the regular Hypervisor forums).

https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/evalcenter?p=free-esxi6

Neither the "manually download" nor the "Download Manager" links do anything.

I've tried 6 different computers (Windows XP and Windows 7 Home and Windows 7 Enterprise), 4 different web browsers (IE10, IE11, Firefox, chrome), and 3 different ISP (Verizon FIOS, Road Runner, and whoever supplies our Corporate LAN--AT&T or something).

I'm not sure VMware is even aware that there's an issue.

I'm keep the following error below when trying to create a Debian Linux VM.  I can create a Windows VM on the same Datastore and I have no problem.  I have over 500GB of free space on the LUN.  I tried different LUNs also with the same result.

The environment is ESXi5.5 current build version.

An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM <VM-Name>.

Can't edit VM settings in ESXi 6.5 web client

It throws this javascript error in my browser.

I tried firefox, chrome, and IE; both Win 7 and Server 2012R2. No luck!

Haven't tried using VM Workstation to edit VM settings (if that is even possible, now that client vcenter exe is no longer.)

I can add new VM's however...

6.5 feels every beta at this point, web interface is totally unuseable IMO. I think I need to go back to 6.0 or 5.5 (those work!)

OVF deployment problems after upgrading to 6.5

$

I have a Win7 box with VMware Workstation 12.5 installed where I build all of the OVFs required by my team.

Recently I upgraded from vSphere 6 to 6.5 and that comes of course with the pain point made mandatory -  the web client.

It's not enough that everything I need to do going from thick client to web client is now scattered all over the place like going from XP to Win10 without trying to miss a beat.

Something major that I need to do, deploying OVFs isn't even working anymore...

First things first, I'm in vcenter and deploy the OVF after maybe 30 minutes right at the end of the deployment received an error regarding a checksum on the manifest file.  Well this is umm, your manifest file VMware created by the latest version of VMware Workstation. Hmm.

So I've traversed a few roads with this OVF stuff over the years, I checked into the virtual hardware, it's a new server 2016 VM I'm trying to deploy so I wanted to make sure I didn't have anything messed up with virtual hardware versions or virtual hardware types that have been problematic in prior versions.  Nope, everything looks to be ok.

Second try at deploying -- during the browse to files I didn't select the manifest file, I left it out, the import appears to be successful, no checksum errors.

Attempt to boot up the VM and receive this message:

A disk read error occurred

Press control + alt + del to restart

Hmm, is this OVF corrupt?  So I re-export it from Workstation and redeploy it... same error.

Do I have SAN issues?  Redeployed to a different datastore on a different array... same error.

Is there like some incompatibility with the virtual SCSI controller on 6.5?  I am running LSI Logic SAS, should be fine.  I tried one or two others, ... same error.

Upgraded the virtual hardware, ... same error.

Upgraded the OVF tool VMware Workstation uses to the latest version available 4.2..re-export OVF, import, ... same error.

Eventually hit google and see a bunch of stuff in the 6.5 release notes for OVF, nothing however seems to match up exactly with what I'm seeing here.

Spoke with a couple of co-workers who claimed to have deployed the same OVFs that I built for them on standalone ESXi 6.5 (no vcenter) and claimed to have not experienced this issue!

Now I go to one of the standalone ESXi 6 servers that I have admin rights on in another dept.  Deploy the same OVF, it deploys with no error and boots right up.

Hmm, so now I shut down the VM and export it from the stand alone ESXi server, import it to my 6.5 vSphere, same error, disk read error.

So that rules out Workstation but can anyone tell me what's going on with this?

I have wasted a good portion of several days on this issue and seem no further along to understanding it.

Cannot open the disk or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

After a crash I'm getting the following on one server.

An unexpected error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM vm-10961.

Reason: Failed to lock the file.

Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/UniqueIdenitfier/ServerName/ServerName_1-000001.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

VMDK files as follows

ServerName.vmdk

ServerName_1.vmdk

ServerName_4.vmdk

ServerName_5.vmdk

ServerName_1-000001.vmdk

ServerName_4-000001.vmdk

ServerName_5-000001.vmdk

The above files are around 50gb each.

Im currently downloading to for a backup and will check the CID. Any other help would be appreciated.

I'm just connecting to the web GUI for the host, I don't have vCenter server.

When I go into the Host - Monitor - Hardware - Storage, I get the message "The Small Footprint CIM Broker Daemon (SFCBD) is running, but no data has been reported. You may need to install a CIM provider for your storage adapter." Below I see "No data available".

Hardware is a Dell PowerEdge R630 with Perc H730 Mini and a Raid 10 configuration with 8x 2.5" disks.

I am running “Dell Customized Image ESXi 6.5 Update 1 A05 (based on ESXi VMKernel Release Build 6765664)” which contains driver “Dell PERC Controller Drivers - lsi-mr3 - 7.700.50.00”

sfcbd-watchdog service ist running and System Sensors are working and viewable.

Dell VMWare OMSA is installed.

The system is working without any problems and I have Rebooted the host several times.

I would appreciate for any help/advice on how I can get my storage monitoring data visible?

ESXi 6.5 Failing to upload/deploy OVA files postNFCData failed error

$

I've been tasked with testing out multiple SSL VPN solutions for our company. Naturally before putting it into our dev or production servers I wanted create a test environment with two desktops to try out different SSL VPN trials.

Client: Version 1.23.0 (Build 6360286)

Host:Version 6.5.0 (Build 6765664)

I deployed F5-BIG-IP's OVA (1.36GB) perfectly fine and could experiment around with the software. Next I went to try out Array Network's vxAG (2.40GB) and it failed with different errors, I thought it may just be Array's OVA is corrupt. From there I went out and tried damn small linux to see if it was an OVA problem but the linux client deployed without a hitch. So I went to try to deploy Pulse Secure SSL VPN solution which is an VMDK and OVF file (3.02GB) and that eventually error-ed out just like Array Network's. I tried uploading a large file and that ending up failing (Windows install.esd 2.87GB) so I have a feeling it has something to do with the file sizes.

Here are the multiple different errors:

If I try to create a new virtual machine the OVA it gets to a random percent freezes and eventually gives the 'Result: Failed - Upload disk cancelled' and I get a "Failed to deploy VM: postNFCData failed" error (Note the VMDK file uploads to the datastore but not the OVF or MF)

If I try to just upload the file to the datastore it also gets to the same percent, freezes then after a random amount of time the OVA shows in the datastore, but if you close the datastore page and reopen it the file magically disappears! Meanwhile the 'Upload file to datastore' Task is still hanging at the same percent.

Array Network's vxAG gets to 74-75% then fails

Pulse gets to 60% and fails

The Windows install.esd gets to 60% and fails

Attempted troubleshooting

I've tried Chrome, Firefox, and IE

I've tried ESXi 6.0 and different builds of 6.5

I've patched to the most up-to-date host and client version (Suggested in related discussions:ESXi 6.0 U2 - "Failed to deploy VM: postNFCData failed." - when importing a OVA template via ESXi Host Client 1.5.0.)

I've tried messing with certificates and DNS to a degree

Added a licencing key

I really rather not resort to using the ovftool even though I constantly hear how amazing it is.

Does anyone have a fix or other troubleshooting routes I could take? Any help would be much appreciated!

ESXi cannot detect disks.

Hi, I'm running esxi 6 and having trouble detecting disks. esx just can't see them at all whereas a ubuntu live disk can. I have an ssd and 2 hdd's connected through an adaptec 6405 raid contoller card in their own individual JBOD's, this is a configuration that works on two of our other servers. I have tried re-initialising disk and rebuilding partition table in gparted but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Raid controller is on HCL http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=io&productid=20867&deviceCategory=io&details=1&partner=475&releases=273&keyword=6405&page=1&display_interval=10&sortColumn=Partner&sortOrder=Asc

I am building a new Windows 10 1803 template and using the same guest customization that I have used with previous builds of Windows 10. The vm is cloned from the template and applies sysprep successfully but the machine never reboots/renames or gets added to the domain.

I have rebuilt the Guest Customization settings from scratch and still get the same result.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I've got 1 HP DL380 Gen9 + HP H241 HBA + HP Ultrium 3000 SAS and installed ESX 6.5

Is it possible to connect that Tape Drive to a Windows VM and use it with Veeam for Backups? If yes, how can I do that?

Many thanks in advance,

vCenter 6.5 - vcenter appliance stops working out of the blue, AGAIN!!

$

This happened to me a few months ago on a fresh install of the vcenter appliance 6.5. It just stopped working a week or two after applying an update. Services would not start and there was no indication as to why. It wasn't a space issue, it wasn't that other issue with a duplicate value in the vpostgres database I read about either. I finally gave up and wiped it out to redeploy from scratch.

Well low and behold, sometime last night vcenter stopped working again. This time it wasn't even a full week after having applied the 6.5.0c patch. Only two services start, none of the others will. My deployment is two appliances, a PSC and the vCenter. The PSC appears fine and the services are showing healthy. The vCenter turned to garbage again.  Here's an output of service-control:

root@mp1vsivcs501 [ ~ ]# service-control --status

Trying to start any service produces a similar output:

The first thing that pops out for me is line 11, "Failed to execute operation: Unit file is masked". I get that on every service I attempt to start and I'm not finding anything in VMware's knowledge portal about it. This is extremely frustrating.

**Additional info**

Running a search on just unit file is masked took me to a generic ubuntu thread about systemctl showing masked unit files. Here's the output of the systemctl list-unit-files:

Not sure if that's normal or not, but it appears to be what the error message is complaining about?

Slow network performance for ESXi 6.7 Host

$

Hi

I'm quite new to ESXi but I seem to be having an issue I can't manage to google up a solution for.

I have a Dell T420 running ESXi 6.7 with several guests on (Windows/Linux/other).  When I try to transfer a file via CLI or GUI from a local data store to either a remote NFS share or just download/upload via the browser the performance is poor, around 115Mbps (yes, bits) upload to a remote share/PC.  Doing the same test from one of the guests shows no issues and I get 800Mbps+

Are there any limitations around what the ESXi management port can do, maybe to stop it impacting guests?  All ports(management and guests) are on a vSwitch with a 2 x 1Gb connection to the physical switch.

Thanks

Paul

How to determine ESXI host UUID

I'm attempting to update a fresh install of ESXI using the VMware-ESXi-6.7.0-Update2-13006603-HPE-Gen9plus-670.U2.10.4.1.8-Apr2019.iso

The install goes fine and the machine boots happily. I get a CVE warning upon login so i thought best to update the the latest version.

I went to https://esxi-patches.v-front.de/ESXi-6.7.0.html and tried the instructions to update to ESXi-6.7.0-20190604001-standard

The commands I used were and the error I got are:

First thing i did was enable swap on my system as per the many threads I have read regarding the issue. Unfortunately the issues still persists. I also tried installing just the tools update, but that ISO comes with the latest version.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Dear Community,

as per specs, APC PCNS only works up to VS 5.5. Has anyone tried it with VS 6? Or is there any other way to gracefully shutdown an ESXi 6 Host through an UPS?

Thank you an best regards,
