Hi,

we have some XenServer Vm's running and need to migrate them to ESXi because of stability issues with XenServer.

my major problem is, that we don't have access to the VM's (no Admin Credentials).

How can i migrate these VM's to ESXi and Install VMWare Tools wihtout Access ?

Incorrect memory utlization for 1 VM Web Client 6.5

Hi - After upgrading my host to ESXi 6.5 and VCSA to 6.5 I have found that one of my VM's shows all memory being utilized in the summary screen and when checking the performance chart for percentage used it displays 100% (This is not the case when checking task manager in Windows)

Consequently the vSphere web client complains about memory usage for this VM.

I have 20+ other VM's on 2012 R2 that are not experiencing this problem. The only difference I can see is that this particular VM has passthrough enabled for the LSI card.

The VM has no reservation set and the limit is set to 'unlimited'. If I set a reservation to match the total memory size the problem still occurs.

The VM in question runs Server 2012 R2 with an LSI 9260-8i passthrough.

Latest VMware Tools is installed.

I have rebooted the VCSA, the host and the VM.

This issue was not present on ESXi 6.

Where can I get/extract vmxnet3 x64 drivers (from ESX 5.5) for 2012 Server R2?

VM Ping/ARP issue

$

We are having a problem with some of our virtual machines intermittently losing communication with each other, and I’m at a loss as to the source.

We have about 250 VM’s running on about 20 HP BL465C blades installed on two HP C7000 chassis, using the HP Virtual Connect interconnect modules.  The blade chassis are connected to our core Cisco 6500 switches.  The VMWare hosts are at 5.0, the guest VM’s are a mix on Windows 2003, 2008, and 2008R2.

What’s going on is that everything seems to be OK, but then out of nowhere, we will get communication failures between specific machines.    It looks like it’s an ARP issue.  Using PING, it works fine in one direction, but we get an “unreachable” error when going the other way, unless we ping from the target back to the source first.

For example: we have servers, “A” and “B”.   Ping A to B fails with “unreachable”. Ping “B” to “A” works fine.   However after pinging “B” to “A”, we can now ping “A” to “B”, at least for a while until the entry falls out of the ARP cache.  If we go into server “A” and set a static ARP entry (“arp –s”) for server “B”, everything works OK.  Through all this both server “A” and server “B” have no issues communicating with any other machines.

We tried using vMotion to move the servers to a different host, different blade chassis, etc.  Nothing worked except when we put both VM’s on the same host.  Then everything worked OK.  Moving one of the servers to a different host and the problem came back.

It seems like either the ARP broadcast from the one server, or the reply back from the target isn't making it through.  However, according to our networking group, there are no issues showing up Cisco switches.

Early this year, we had an issue where it happened on about a third of machines at the same time (it caused significant outages to production systems!).   It seemed like it was limited to machines on one chassis (but not all of the machines on that chassis).  At that time, we opened up tickets with VMWare and HP.  Neither found anything wrong with our configurations, but somewhere in the various server moves, configuration resets, etc., everything started working.

Since that time we’ve seen it very intermittently on a few machines, but then it seems to go away after a few days.

The issue we found today was that the server we’re using for the Microsoft WSUS server hadn’t been receiving updates from a couple of the member servers.  We could ping from the WSUS to the member server, but not back from the member server unless we put a static ARP entry in the member server.  The member servers are working fine otherwise, talking to other machines OK, etc.   They are a production environment, so we’re limited on the testing we can do.

Also, when it has happened, it seems like always been between machines on the same subnet.  However, most of our servers are on the same subnet, so it might just be coincidence.

I’ve done a lot of internet searching, and have found some postings with similar issues, but haven’t found any solution.  I don’t know if it’s a VMWare issue, HP, Cisco, or Windows issue.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

ESXi 5.5, Passthrough Video Card, Haswell Build

I am currently having difficulties with ESXi 5.5, in passing a video card on to a Windows 7 install.

Components of Note:

Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157409

Processor - Xeon e3-1245v3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116909

RAM - 4x8GB for 32Gb total

Intel 520 180GB SSD for Datastore

ATI Radeon 6450 Graphics Card

I have installed Windows 7 64 bit, passed on a USB controller, where I have a working mouse/keyboard setup. Installed all windows updates, then rebooted and enabled the Radeon 6450 passthrough. It seems to pass through okay, I install drivers, but the system does not recognize any monitor plugged in to the graphics card. It appears to continue to only use the virtualized display adapter.

Also, I can not get the system to boot with any more than 2 gigs of RAM when the video card is passed through.

I have also tried passing through the integrated video chip on the Haswell processor/board, but I get the same results.

If I install VMware tools with the video card passed through, I get a BSOD.

Any ideas? Below is a pic of my passthrough options from this hardware combo.

ESXi 5.x on an Intel J1900 board (Q1900-ITX Asrock) issue

Hello everyone!

I have been trying to install ESXi 5.1u1 & 5.1u2 & 5.5u1 on the following configuration to no success so far:

Asrock Q1900-ITX mobo (Intel J1900 Baytrail SoC, BIOS 1.20 with VT-x support)

8GB RAM Kingston

120GB OCZ Vector 150 (tried to connect on both SATA2.0 and SATA3.0)

Intel CT1000 NIC

Bootable 4GB FAT32 USB stick with an extracted installation (using Unetbootin) (tried to connect on both USB2.0 and USB3.0)

ESXi 5.1uX results in/stops at a black window/screen after the "Relocating modules and starting the kernel" message.

ESXi 5.5u1 starts loading the modules and stops/freezes right after the "Relocating modules and starting the kernel" message.

I have tried in the bios:

- Boot USB legacy

- Boot USB UEFI

- Disabled PXE (both NICs)

- Video memory to a minimum (64MB)

- Disabled onboard audio & NIC

- I have tried (unofficial?) inserting drivers into the installation ISO (NIC/microcode/xahci) from v-front.de.

I know that most/all of my hardware is not on the HCL, which doesn't mean it can't work, of course (like my old system).

All to no luck so far. However I successfully installed Proxmox hypervisor on this system. Others successfully installed NAS4Free (FreeBSD) or Ubuntu/Debian.

But I want ESXi 5.x for my home server, like I have on my old Intel D525 with a max of 4GB and OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (ESXi 5.1u2).

Maybe someone has some tips or advice to install ESXi 5.x on my new system?

VMDirectPath and ATI Radeon

I am using VMware ESXi and I am trying to setup a guest that is Windows 7 that will have an ATI Radeon video card passed through to it.  I actually had this working on a previous system but I had to reinstall.  Now when I do this the guest fails to start and I get the following:

Error message from localhost.XXXXXXXXXXX:
PCIPassthru 004:00.0: Guest tried to (null)map
32 device pages (with base address of 0xb5d20)
to a range occupied by main memory. This is

"2909" to the configuration file and then power
on the VM.

When I do as it asks, the guest now starts but gets an immediate BSOD concerning memory management.  Any ideas on why this is occuring and why it worked at one point but now it fails?

Unable to backup Windows AD Server with VMware Tools installed

Hi Folks

We have some Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs running in DMZ environment. An easy way to backup them is using the integrated Windows Server backup functionality. We recently updated our VMware Tools version from 10.0.9 to 10.1.5 and after this update we weren’t able to use successfully run a system state backup with the integrated Windows Server backup function because we got the following error message every time we tried to backup them:

Error in backup of C:\windows\\systemroot\ during enumerate: Error [0x8007007b] The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

After short investigation we found a registry key under “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsock” named “ImagePath” with the value “\SystemRoot\system32\drivers\vsock.sys” from type “REG_EXPAND_SZ”. This paths originally references to a device driver SYS file under “C:\windows\system32\drivers\vsock.sys” which is used for the vSocket Service API (prior known as VMCI as far as I know).

After we changed this value from “\SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\vsock.sys” to “system32\DRIVERS\vsock.sys” we were able to successfully backup our Servers without any error messages. We also tried to reinstall/repair the VMware Tools and also installed the latest stable 10.1.7 but the VMware Tools provides every time an incorrect path.

Is someone else facing this issue or aware of it?

@VMware: Is there any change planned in a future VMware Tools releases?

Kind regards,

Ybbom

I've upgrade to Esxi 5.5 already and created a vmdk to 4.7 Tb and would like to expand it to 5.6 Tb.  I get the following error message when I attempt to expand it and I don't know why or how to bypass it: Hot-extend was invoked with size (12025908428 sectors) >= 2TB. Hot-extend beyond or equal to 2TB is not supported.

Windows LSI_SAS Driver, Storport hotfix and performance

$

While investigating a Windows 2008 R2 VM disk performance problem, I recently came across the following article about an updated Storport driver for Windows 2008 R2 that indicates it could significantly affect storage performance (see below). It looks really interesting but I have a couple of questions (1) Does the LSI_SAS driver use Storport? and (2) has anyone tried this update?

Computer intermittently performs poorly or stops responding when the Storport driver is used in Windows Server 2008 R2

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2468345

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install some high-performance storage devices on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2. For example, you install a host-based RAID adapter or a Fibre Channel adapter that can access more than 4 gigabytes (GB) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The Storport.sys driver is used to manage these storage devices.
  • The computer has more than 4 GB of physical memory.
  • You install an application or service that uses a large amount of memory on the computer.

For example, you install SQL Server or Exchange Server on the computer.

In this scenario, the computer may intermittently perform poorly or stop responding for a while.

For example, the computer stops responding for 10-20 seconds.

Details from VM problem:

> Several of these events: 129 LSI_SAS N/A N/A Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort3, was issued.

> Server had to be rebooted to clear the problem

ESXi 5.5 ASUS H97M Plus, Intel I218-V "No Network Adapters" Error

$

Hello all!

I'm experimenting with ESXi on my home computer, but keep running into the "No Network Adapters" error, which I understand is because the 5.5 default drivers don't support the Intel I218-V on my Asus H97M-Plus motherboard.

I've looked through these forums and others, and understand that I can use the ESXi Customizer v2.7.2 to add the Intel drivers. The latest version I can find in a .VIB file is net-e1000e-2.3.2.x86_64 which don't seem to work. The latest version I can fine on Intel's site is e1000e-3.0.4. I've tried using the Customizer to insert that version without success.

Also, I'm trying to run ESXi from a bootable USB drive which I create from the ISO using Rufus-1.4.9

My system specs are:

Asus H97M-Plus

Intel 4790S

32GB DDR3-1600 RAM

What's the next step?

Thanks,

LSI provider not working under ESXi 6

Hey,

has anyone got the LSI SMIS provider working with ESXi 6? The LSI support site only lists downloads for 5.0 and 5.x. I tried both, but when I try to discover the host with MegaRAID Storage Manager, I'm unable to find it.

Maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks,

ESXI 6.5 evaluation expired

I am a student and I installed a server at home

I installed ESXI on a Dell R710 sometime in October, my evaluation period is now over.

I have an account with VMWare, but it did not show that I was evaluating this product, so I cannot get a free license.

I downloded the software again and now it show that I am evaluating the product, but because I just downloaded it, it is telling me that the evaluation is good for 60 days, so I still do not have a license, I do not want to reinstall it on my server has it will wipe my VM

anyone has a solution ?

NIC speed 100mbps instead of 1000mbps

I have two HP DL380G6 servers running ESX4i. These servers are equipped with four 1-gigabit NICs. On Server1 all 4NICs are configured and running at 1000mbps.

However, Server2 indicates that one of the network cards is working at 100mbps instead of 1000mbps. 100mbps is listed for both the configured and actual speed, but I can't seem to change it within vSphere/vCenter. The other 3 NICs in server2 are running at 1000mbps.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

VMware ESXi 5.5.0 hanging while booting

This is 5.5.0 build 1331820 hanging on "nfsclient loaded successfully". The host is part of a ESX cluster and was running fine until after we had to rebuild vCenter server. All other hosts and everything else in the cluster is working fine. Has anyone seen this issue? I tried letting it sit for 20 minutes, then cold booted again and still the same.

This is on an HP ProLiant.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

PropertyCollector.RetrieveContents

Dear folks

I just upgraded my FREE ESXi 4.1U1 system to FREE ESXi 5. So far so good. The box is working fine so far.

The problem I have is when editing the settings of a VM especially, when I press the "Add"-Button to add some new

devices e.g. a new harddisk.

Or when I press "Edit" under "Configuration->Licensed Features"

Nothing happens for about 15 seconds and then the following error message appers:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The request failed because the remote server '192.168.1.10' took to long to respond. (The command has timed out

as the remote server is taking to long to respond.)

Call "PropertyCollector.RetrieveContents" for object "ha-property-collector" on ESXi "192.168.1.10" failed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This only happens in the situations mentioned above. All other dialogs and settings seem work fine.

- Re-Registering VMs in the inverntory doesn't help (As seen it is not only a VM related problem --> Licensed features as well)

- I disabled Desktop Firewall and Antivirus

- vSphere Client version is: 5.0.0 / 455964

- It happens for existing and for new VMs.

- I can remove devices such as Floppy Drive. That works fine.

Any idea how I can get back the ability to "Add" devices to my VMs?

Regards,

Oliver

ESXi 5.5 - vSphere Web Client download

$

I just installed VMware ESXi 5.5 Free Edition on a Dell server, when I open up VMware vSphere Client it says the following:

"In vSphere 5.5, all new vSphere features are available only through the vSphere Web Client. The traditional vSphere Client will continue to operate, supporting the same feature set as vSphere 5.0, but not exposing any of the new features in vSphere 5.5.

The vSphere Client is still used for the vSphere Update Manager (VLM) and Host Client, along with a few solutions (eg. Site Recovery Manager)."

Where do I download vSphere Web Client?

Thanks
