I'm pretty new to ESXi. I got SSH turned on. Connected to it.
Now i want to do some work on the vm images (problem with my snapshots not going away).
Anyhow, when I try to run the command "vmware-cmd -l" it gives me:
"-ash: vmware-cmd: not found"
What gives? What could be wrong?

any idea why I'm getting this errors:

and after pressing OK buttom I'm getting another error:
The type initializer for "VirtualInfrastructure.Utils.HttpWebRequestProxy" threw an exception
when I try to connect to ESXi 4.0 with vSphere client?

I set up a redundant storage system (active-active) and did not find any information about NFS multipathing within ESXi. Is that possible? I only read about Multipathing with iSCSI, which is apparently possible.
Is there anywhere information about that?

I am pretty new to ESX but have bene using workstation, and server for some time. My department have now moved to ESXi and I am copying the VM images from one server to another.
I wanted know is there a way to cancel a copy task in vsphere client once its in progress? I noticed that when I select the task the opion to cancel the task is greyed out. I connect to the server via ssh and ran a ps -ef|more but could not see anything that resembled a copy process.
Also the copy and move option seems to be very slow considering I am copying from one vmfs file system to another vmfs filesystem.

Just installes SBS2011 on ESXi4 and after install in device manager there is still one driver missing for the (translated) basic system device.
The hardware-id is PCI\VEN_15AD&DEV_0740&SUBSYS_074015AD&REV_10
I think it's a pci device. But how to fix this? No driver is available via Windows Update.

After a power outage my VM does not power on. Appears a message thay says:
msg.hbacommon.corruptredo:The redolog of **virtual - server***.vmdk has been detected to be corrupt. The virtual machine needs to be powered on. If the problem still persists, you need to discard the redolog.
I'm a newbie on VMware..
i have read son post but none of them seems to resolve this issue.

how can I find out what EVC mode should I choose for these CPUs (4.1U3) ? Because I changed HW of one host, I created another cluster with EVC enabled. Before I start to cold migrate the VMs from the original cluster, I would like to verify if I have chosen the right EVC mode.
CPUs:
- Xeon X3430
- Xeon E5504
- Xeon E5-2407
My clusters right now are
1. cluster - EVC disabled - Xeon X3430, Xeon E5504
2. cluster - EVC Intel Xeon Core 2 - Xeon E4-2407
I am afraid that after I cold migrate VMs to the new cluster, and add machines to the new cluster, I will still not be able to do live migration.. So I will have to recreate another cluster with another EVC..

I am running ESXi 4.1.0. I have a number of 2k8 R2 machines running on this server.
What I've noticed is that some, not all VMs are using 75%-95% of the available memory. When I look at the processes running, it's very minimal with nothing really using anywhere near that much memory. I used RamMap to try to try to see who was the hidden culprit. RamMap showed that "Driver Locked" was using 4-5GB of memory. (As shown here in another site thread)
Upon further research, I found some people said this was related to VMWare Tools. Sure enough, as soon as I uninstalled VMWare Tools from the VM the memory went to where I would expect, and "Driver Locked" went to almost nothing, and eventually disappeared.
I installed VMWare tools with an upgrade when I converted the VM. Of the maybe 12 VMs I think 3-4 are experienceing this.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Every morning I noticed my VMs just shutdown and I have to restart it every morning.
The thing is that few weeks before it was working ok running 24/7 but now a big problem.
Does anyone knows why my VMs suddenly shutdown?
I'm so new with this I don't even know how check the logs.

we have some problems with a lun. each attemtpt to start a vm, which use this lun, ends with following exception:
Failed to open '/vmfs/volumes/4c5a5ebd-a904712c-0032-001517ce8e38/icg4aida/icg4aida-flat.vmdk' : Input/output error
or
Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4c5a5ebd-a904712c-0032-001517ce8e38/icg4aida/temp.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
is there a tool to check the lun and if yes repair it?
we tried to remove the lun and reattach it, but we can not remove it,because it is shown as busy.
there are also strange things when we want to view the storage in vcenter gui. in the vm we had the storage attached to (in the past) we can see it under the devices tab but not in the storage tab. On the other two servers we see the lun in both tabs.
we are using esxi4.1 on a intel modular server

I'm running ESXI 4.1 (260247), on a DELL R410, with a DELL SAS6/IR SATA Controller, with 2x 500GB SATA Drives.
Everything was running fine, but since one week, after some time, my datastore become inactive.
I can still connect to vsphere, but the datastore is shown as Inactive. VM appears to be still runing (No one is marked as Inactive), but I can't ping anyone, nor reach them using Console or SSH.
The only solution I have found is to restart the host (Which takes 30-40min, as it's trying to save the state of the VM, but seem's he can't, as the datastore is inactive.). Anyway, after 30-40min, the server reboot, and everything is running fine.
The datastore become inactive always during the night. During the night, I have a job that backup my mail server. Maybe, it's because of a high I/O of the disks, then the datastore become inactive, even if it's seems to be weird, as I had this job running for months without any problems.
I don't have anything in the logs, so a little hard to debug.
I tried rescanning VMFS Modules, Refresh Datastore, Scan the controller, but nothing works expect rebooting the host.
If anyone have an idea, it would be greatly appreciated, as I can't sleep to much last weeks, because I have to check if my server is still running every night...

I've been reading a lot on invalid configuration for devices 0, 1, and 4, but my error is on "11". It happens when I create a new VM based on a snapshot of an existing. My question is, how do I know to what device the error is occurring? That would at least help me troubleshoot where the issue lies.
I thought it was due to the fact that I had a floppy image attached, since that was the 11th device from the top of the list. But after disconnecting the floppy, and later removing the floppy drive complete, device 11 still eludes me. Any help would be great. Thanks all!

I'm wondering if the following scenario would work.
I have a Dell R710 with Perc 6/i controller in it, and the controller will have SAS hard drives in raid that houses Vmware ESXI 4.1 and yada yada, I know all that will work fine. Those hard drives will hold the Guest OS's.
My question is, if I install this in the server:

Would I be able to VMDirectPath it to one of the Guest OS's? I'm not sure if VMDirectPath requires some form of compatibility, or as long as the host supports it any device can be passed through. The Revodrive would only be used as an additional drive/partition within that Guest OS to house an SQL Database. Since it is a fairly busy database, I was looking into the higher read/write and IOPS that the device would provide.
Machine is a Dell R710, 2x X5670 Xeon CPU's. Perc 6/i Controller with SAS hard drives that will house vmware ESXi 4.1.

I am installing ESXi 4.0 on a server with an ASUS P5M2motherboard which has a built in RAID. I would like to have it configured as RAID1 for fault tolerance but experienced an unexpected result.
I started by configuring my server with RAID1. During the installation, I was prompted to select which disk to install ESXi on. With the RAID enabled and installing Windows, Windows would see the RAID as only one drive. ESXi is smart enough to know there are 2 drives even thought the RAID is configured.
Should I just configure RAID1, install on disk0 and figure that the RAID will replicate the data to both drives? I'm just kind of confused that the ESXi installation presented both drives instead of it thinking there was only one like you would expect.

I have configured my esx box to send syslog remotely to McAfee SIEM as the KB, the log are sent but on the Event Log Manager Console I see all logged events, not only successfull/failed login.
There is a way to send only successfull/failed login?

In ESXi 4, Windows 2008 VMs seem to want to default to the E1000 model NIC when creating a new one. However, after reading the KB on this (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1001805), is seems the new VMXNET 3 is supported for Windows 2008 (and Windows 2003 for that matter).
So which is the best to use? It seems the VMXNET it the best choice because it has all the latest bells and whistles - but sometimes that is a bad thing too. The KB really does not say WHAT to use, but rather what options are available...unless I overlooked it.
Any advice?
