ERROR: Unable to create virtual SCSI device for scsi0:0

0
0

Hi all!

I've just move (copy) VM folder from VMware Server to my ESXi 4.1 by scp command (Linux). After that I've add the VM to inventory. When I've played the Virtual Machine I got this error:

Unable to create virtual SCSI device for scsi0:0, '/vmfs/volumes/4c89ed89-aee32072-1cb3-842b2b49b612/Debian 503 Lenny/Debian 503 Lenny.vmdk'

Failed to open disk scsi0:0: Unsupported or invalid disk type 7. Make sure that the disk has been imported.

This problem occurs even importing all VM folder by vSphere Client.

Anyone know why this error occurs and how fix it? Is it possible to do this (just copy and play VM) or I have to import VM by VMware Converter or VMware Go?

Error: Unable to connect to the MKS: Virtual machine config file does not exist

Dear folks,

Another wierd situation I ran into this morning. We have an ESXi 4 with several VM's running. As I tried to open the console of one of the VM's running Oracle Enterprise Linux, I got the following error message:

Unable to connect to the MKS: Virtual machine config file does not exist.

The ESXi we have has 2 datastores. I browsed the datastore where the VM was stored but was surprised to see that there was no folder for this VM at all. I couldn't find the VM folder in the other datastore as well. Nobody has access to the datastore but me and I am pretty sure that I didn't delete the folder.

The strange thing is that the VM is running and I can access all the services. This VM is running a Content Server and I cannot afford to shut it down. I know that if I shutdown this VM I will not be able to power it back up.

Can anybody help me in this regard?

D-Link DGE-528T 1GB Network Card on ESXi4.1

Hi Guys

I read all over the place (prior to ESXi4) that this network card is not supported.  That said, I have plugged into my machine one of these cards and doing a "lspci" get the following information:

000:008:04.0 Network controller: D-Link System Inc DGE-528T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

the "lspci -n" command also displays the following information:

  000:008:04.0 Class 0200: 1186:4300

I also had a look at the /etc/vmware/pci.ids file and can find an entry in it for this card:

4300  DGE-528T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

This tells me that the network controlled is active, working and identiefied 100%.

Questions:

1. Why can I not find this in my ESXi Console to use as a device?

2. Why would all the info be on the OS, but not made available within the EXSi environment?

Kind regards

I've got an issue with this error popping up in the system logs on the Guest OS. We're running Windows Server 2K8 on ESXI 4.0. Searching around I've seen that updating the LSI drivers might resolve this issue, however running the update driver utility yeilds nothing new other than the installed driver set. Looking at my event log it would seem this problem comes and goes on it's own. Our storage device is a Netgear ReadyNAS Pro NAS device connected with teamed gigabit ports. Does anyone have any ideas as to what would cause this and what I might look for to resolve it?

I have a Netgear ReadyNAS 1100 NAS

where I have set a NFS share so I can add a Datastore on my ESXi 4.1, I

used the following instructions in their site: http://www.readynas.com/?p=3030

Every

time I try to attach the NFS share through the GUI i get the following

message: "Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to complete

Sysinfo operation.  Please see the VMkernel log file for more details."

I

have also tried through the SSH console by using the command:esxcfg-nas

-a -o 10.0.0.10 -s /share/mynfs mynfs and I get the error:

"Connecting to NAS volume: mynfs

Unable to connect to NAS volume mynfs: Unable to complete Sysinfo operation. Please see the VMkernel log file for more details."

How do I go about converting from a thick provisioned  harddisk to a thin provisioned one. I converted a VM from VMware workstation and it has used far more real disk than expected.

unable to connect to the mks: error connecting to /bin/vmx process

0

Hello,

i  know this problem seems to be common, but either there are no solutions available, or solutions are not applicable.

i will start with the hardware and software we are running esxi4 (latest patchlevel). The Problem is occuring on more than one blade,

but i will describe the scenario with one blade. (other blades do have about the same vm setup. hardware is the same)

we do not have any special resource / share configuration. all share,... settings are as on a fresh esxi installation.

Hardware:

   - BLC460 G1, 2 x xeon E5430, 16 gb ram 2 local sas disc, 4 nics (2 for network, 2 for nas)

   - NetApp Filer

The Datastores are mounted through NFS

VMs on the Blade:

- linux (4 gb ram, 2 cpus)

- linux (2 gb ram, 2cpus)

- linux (2 gb ram, 2cpus)

- Windows Server 2008R2 (4 gb ram, 2 cpus)

- all vms do have 4mb video ram (maybe this the problem?)

all vms do have 1 or more e1000 interfaces configured. some vms are migrated from physical machines. the win 2008 r2 server is a fresh installed 2 weeks ago.

we have no blade where we exceed our 8 core / 16 gb ram limit. it doesnt matter if windows 2003, 2008, 2008 R2,.. is running. all linux machines have no gui started. all running in run level 3. windows servers do have vmware tools installed.

now.. from time to time (sometimes after 10 days, sometimes after 2 months) we cant connect to the windows machines anymore. neither over console, nor over rdp. when trying with the vcenter console we get the message  "unable to connect to the mks: error connecting to /bin/vmx process". if this happens, all windows machines on the blade are affected. no pingable anymore, they are just dead. we cant shutdown the vms (stops at 95%). all we can do is reboot the whole esxi server.

sometimes this problem occurs:

any ideas?

Upgrading ESXi 4.1 to 5.x

How do I upgrade my server running ESXi 4.1 to 5.1?  Is this straightforward as downloading the 5.1 image and boot my server with it?  It will not wipe the content?

Host battery status alarm

Hi,

I have installed ESXi4 on some servers and they all come up with an alarm in vCenter:

Status: Warning

Name: Host battery status

These are all Dell PowerEdge 2950 servers. Does anyone know what this alarm means? Could this be a bug and should I disable this alarm?

Memory Ballooning

0
0

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and kinda have a noob question on memory ballooning.  Now i know that memory ballooning is one of ESX RAM reclaiming techniques and it balloons a guest OS RAM and swaps it to the guest OS swap file the host created, is that right?

Say I have a VM with 2GB of RAM allocated, ballooning occurs and balloons to 1GB.  I guess my question is, this 1GB thats ballooned, is this reserved for the VM (1GB the host can't touch) or this 1GB moved off the VM?  Im just trying to understand how ballooning works and comparing that with the information under the "Resource Allocation" tab of a VM in Vsphere client.

Hope this makes sense.

How to Backup Esxi Host Configuration

0
0

Please can anyone suggest me a simple method of backing up Esxi Host Configuration which can later be restored  on a freshly installed copy of Esxi( same version) if required. in the event of HDD Failure etc...

Normally, we use vsphere client on Windows Workstations to access Esxi Hosts. I was reading into different posts related backing up using vicfg-cfgbackup command using vCLI or vMA but couldn't really get a step-by-step how to....Will appreciate if someone guides me in a simplest manner possible.

Reclaim unused space on thin provisioned disk?

0
0

Hi all.

I have ESXi host with 300GB space, and 5 Linux guests. All of them have been configured to use thin provisioned disk, and to use max 200GB.

First guest used about 100GB. So I tried to remove temp and some large files. Although I removed around 30GB from it, ESXi still shows that it is using 100GB.

A read on the forum that it isn't possible to reclaim this freed space without VMotion and moving this VM to another datastore.

Is this really true? Is there any tool or procedure to reclaim unused space without downtime?

Disk Provisioned Size Greyed Out

I have a virtual SCSI drive for a Windows 2008 64-bit guest.  I have recently run out of disk size and need to increase it.  From the online help, apparantely I can increase the size even while the VM is running.  However, whether running, suspended, or shutdown, I am not able to increase the disk size.  The option is greyed out, as you can see below.  What am I missing?

Thanks!

Which NIC for Windows 2008? E1000 or VMXNET 3?

0
0

In ESXi 4, Windows 2008 VMs seem to want to default to the E1000 model NIC when creating a new one. However, after reading the KB on this (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1001805), is seems the new VMXNET 3 is supported for Windows 2008 (and Windows 2003 for that matter).

So which is the best to use? It seems the VMXNET it the best choice because it has all the latest bells and whistles - but sometimes that is a bad thing too. The KB really does not say WHAT to use, but rather what options are available...unless I overlooked it.

Any advice?

How to install windows 8 on esxi 4.1 ?

0

Hi

I would like to install windows 8 on my current esxi 4.1 environment, of course without success. I receive the error about that

HAL_Initialization_Failed

I've found serveral forums that only workstation 8 and new esxi5 with patch2 is able to install Windows 8.

Is there any solution regarding windows 8 on esxi 4.1 ?

It would be great, because I must not upgrade to esxi 5

Thanks in advance

VMDirectPath and ATI Radeon

I am using VMware ESXi and I am trying to setup a guest that is Windows 7 that will have an ATI Radeon video card passed through to it.  I actually had this working on a previous system but I had to reinstall.  Now when I do this the guest fails to start and I get the following:

Error message from localhost.XXXXXXXXXXX:

When I do as it asks, the guest now starts but gets an immediate BSOD concerning memory management.  Any ideas on why this is occuring and why it worked at one point but now it fails?
