ESXi 4.1.0_b345043 Consolidating Snapshots question

vmware_snapshot_q.png

Hi all,

We had a crash situation with one of our servers, and the backup admin took a snapshot of the system as it was, then rolled it back to an earlier snapshot (PRIOR TO MAIN 6_12_13).

We 've managed to since correct the problems with the server, and are happy with the way things are as it is. However, before I do what I believe is the correct method, I wanted to ensure:

*) If I hit the "Delete All" button: does that mean it will delete ALL snapshots on the server and flatten the image down to IT'S CURRENT RUNNING STATE with no snapshots? This is what I would like at this point (as I call it, flattening/solidifying/consolidating the server image to a master state)

*) As this is a PROD server, I need to schedule some downtime (as it's an ESXi box) Is there a way to capture off the "before hard drive crash" snapshot to a separate vmdk of it's own, so I can mount it off-site later on to do some forensics on my own time? (this is more of a wish at this point)

TIA for all the answers!

Mapping/Mounting VMWare Datastore as drive to windows, is that possible?

Hi all,

I have one of the VM's .vmdk file deleted from VMWARE client datastore browser. I ls thru SSH and found flat file is no longer there as well.

However I googled and found that if the hard disk type is thick provisioning then it's possible to recover using recovery tools.

I now have the tools to scan but how could I map/mount VM datastore as a drive in my Windows?

Thank you.

init id x respawning too fast - disabling in 5 minutes.

Hi All, I am so so upset after I have spent hours and days on resolving the issue with InstallShield unable to run in graphical mode on my Redhat 5 update 4 64-bit machine (vmware guest).   It turned out that I have to uninstall the libXp and libXmu 64-bit rpms and reinstall it with 32-bit ones.   Which seems to resolve that problem.  After I rebooted my Redhat machine, it failed with "init id x respawning too fast - disabling in 5 minutes.".    Can't do much about this screen.

I am planning to boot up with my Redhat installation CD and hoping that it could recover this issue.  I can't seem to be able to get it boot up from either ISO or installation CD when I power on my virtual guest.   It keeps booting from the HD.   Is there a way force it to boot up from my CDROM device at the power-on time?

Or someone knows how to resolve the error "init id x respawning too fast - disabling in 5 minutes."?

Please advise.  Many thanks.

Best Practices for ESXi boot device?

I know ESXi can boot from SAN, USB, local Disk, etc.

Currently I have 3 hosts that use local Raid10 disks for both booting from and as datastore locations (along with iSCSI SAN access to larger LUNs for larger storage).

I recall someone at a VM user group going on about how they were booting from USB key and how wonderful that was. In my environment, there are no plans for SAN boot (nor any proper HBAs to do this with), but I am wondering if booting from USB key would be a better option that booting from direct attached RAID disks?

The benefits of USB (off the top of my head):

  • no moving parts

  • only requires small (8GB) size for USB storage

  • no performance hit (at least after boot is done) as ESXi loads itself into RAM.

  • easy to keep a backup key ready in case there are issues booting from existing one. (What about the ESXi configuration? Could that be backed up onto a spare key at regular intervals? I am not sure how this would work.

So, would anyone recommend or does anyone use usb boot in production ESXi/vCenter environments? Thoughts?

Has anyone tried AMD Phenom™ II 1055T Six-Core Processor?

I am thinking in buying a ZT System with the above processor in it. I wonder if anyone has tested this processor before?

I am going to use this computer to learn and simulator some failure situations.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks all.

Trick to getting Dell 1950 running from a USB drive?

$

Hi All

I wondered if anyone has gotten a Dell 1950 server to boot from a ESXi (v4) .dd image on a USB drive? Server is dual Xeon dual-core, 4GB, Perc 5i. It starts booting OK, gets about half-way through the yellow screen and then fails with "failed to find boot partition" or similar (not in front of machine at this moment). I'm using the 'vanilla' ESXi version (not the Dell customised).

Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I have a visor host which currently has 290M and only 5MB left. I would like to increase the partition space of this.

Do we have a mechanism to increase this without bringing down the OS ? Looking for something like gpart kinds.

Can anyone help me regarding this.

Thanks in advance,

Sudks

Can i run a shell script on ESXi4 server?

Hi,

I have a shell script which we usually run on ESX 3.5 servers.

Need to know whether i can run the same shell script in ESXi4 server. If yes, without a service console how to run the script? Is it possible from powerCLI?

The script collects some info about esx hardware, running services etc..

Local Datastore become Inactive after long time

$

Hi,

I'm running ESXI 4.1 (260247), on a DELL R410, with a DELL SAS6/IR SATA Controller, with 2x 500GB SATA Drives.

Everything was running fine, but since one week, after some time, my datastore become inactive.

I can still connect to vsphere, but the datastore is shown as Inactive. VM appears to be still runing (No one is marked as Inactive), but I can't ping anyone, nor reach them using Console or SSH.

The only solution I have found is to restart the host (Which takes 30-40min, as it's trying to save the state of the VM, but seem's he can't, as the datastore is inactive.). Anyway, after 30-40min, the server reboot, and everything is running fine.

The datastore become inactive always during the night. During the night, I have a job that backup my mail server. Maybe, it's because of a high I/O of the disks, then the datastore become inactive, even if it's seems to be weird, as I had this job running for months without any problems.

I don't have anything in the logs, so a little hard to debug.

I tried rescanning VMFS Modules, Refresh Datastore, Scan the controller, but nothing works expect rebooting the host.

If anyone have an idea, it would be greatly appreciated, as I can't sleep to much last weeks, because I have to check if my server is still running every night...

Thanks !

Asterisk using Vm-Ware

I've been doing research to see about virtualizing our asterisk servers. And most of the information I have googled and searched on these forums are all roughly 2 years or more old. Most the information I have found says you can virtualize asterisk and SIP/IAX will work fine, but anything that requires hardware (Digium T1/PRI cards, Analog line card, etc) is a no go with ESXI. And on the same premise any feature that requires hardware timing has issues.

Since all of the information is two years old and considering how popular asterisk and its derivites are nowadays as an easy cheap and highly effective (and resellable) VoIP/PBX/IVR/ect solution I would like to think these issues had been resolved, but since I can't find a concerete answer one way or the other after a good bit of googleing and forum searching, I figured I'd ask here.

Can asterisk be virtualized and use Hardware add on cards such as digital T1/PRI card, analog line cards, etc with the use of the newest ESXi 4 version virtual host?

Fastest Way to Copy 1.7TB Datastore

$

Problem: I need to copy 1.7TB of data off a local disk datastore on an ESXi 4.1 box to a USB external drive and ship that cross-country. Datastore just contains about a dozen VMs and their related files. Local disk is a pile of 600GB SAS in a RAID5.

I've tried a few methods and all have been painfully slow or just flat out did not work. All tests done with same ~40GB VM.

1) Laptop. USB connected. Laptop on GigE network, same switch as ESXi server. Copy using Datastore Browser. 40GB file took 32 minutes which translated to the full 1.7TB would be around 22 hours.

2) Attached USB to server [IBM 3850 X5] and mounted it on a guest. Copy starts out fast then gets insanely slow to the point where the time remaining keeps going up to well over an hour before being canceled. Looking at performance logs you can see it spike high in disk reads and then goes nearly flat. We're talking 86,563 KBps at highest but then drops down to 2000-4000 KBps and stays there. Copy method was Datastore Browser.

3) Attached USB to server [IBM 3850 X5] and mounted it on a guest. Tried Veeam's FastSCP and got great initial transfer speeds until it tapered off identical to #2.

On both items 2 and 3 when I tried with smaller files [~2GB ISO] it would fly through to the end fine but hang at 99% forever. Very odd there as well.

Remote site so my "helper" to move the USB around is gone for the day but will try Veeam on laptop with laptop connected to USB in morning.

Any clue why 2-3 start GREAT but then go into the tank and stay there? That seems like it would be the most direct method since it avoids all network traffic. The hanging at the end part is also troublesome.

Any other methods I should be looking at?

Thanks!

Expand Local Datastore

Hello,

I have an ESX 4.1 with only a local datastore (RAID5) within virtual machines on a DELL server

I want to enlarge the datastore, I don't have enough free space to creat more virtual machines.

To do it:

-Install a new hardisk (with vmware powered on)

- Add the new hardisk  to the Raid5 with With DELL Open Manage

- wait to finish expand raid 5

- Power Off Vmware machines?  or Continue started?

  - Expand with vmware Vshpere the local datastore   (what time need to expand?)

I want to know if I can do an extend with the new unpartitioned space on the existing local datastore without lose my virtual machines? I only the local datastore with esxi when I expand the esxi continue working?

Can anybody help me ?

(ESXi 4.0)

I was going to Create a new user through VI client, but a error:"username or password has an invalid format" encounted regardless of  any format text  consisted of  the username and password.

In the console of the ESXi 4.0 I have found a suspicious :"passwd:Athentication token manipulation error passwd:"

Can ESXi 4.0 create new user?

Files on ESXi deleted after each reboot

Is there a place to save files (scripts/logs) on an ESXi 4.1 server that won't get blown away when the box reboots?  Specifically, I want to add a cronjob that calls a shell script which outputs to a log.  Is this possible?

Thanks.

VMUpgradeHelper slow to restore network configuration

$

I have a 2003 server on ESXi4 that has a script that runs at bootup.  Most of the time it works fine but sometimes it fails because (I think) it doesn't yet have a network connection.  Normally, the Application log in the event viewer has an event ID 258 that says "Restoring network configuration" followed by event ID 270 "Not restoring network configuration for adapter... The device ID for this adapter is unchanged" followed by event ID 271 "Restored Network Configuration".  This all happens in 3 secs or so according to the time stamps on the events.

But when I have a problem with the script, I don't see a 270, just 258 followed about 3 min later by 271.  That window between 258 and 271 appears to be when the startup script is trying to run.  I'm not real familiar with this upgradehelper service, does it think the adapter is actually changing, and that's why there's no 270 and this time delay between 258 and 271?  I'm not adding or removing adapters, all that's happening is that a scheduled task (on the guest) gives it a daily reboot.  About once a week I seem to have this issue.  Any ideas?

How to fsck (repair vmfs 3 volume) with ESXi?

$

A hard drive failed on an iSCSI volume (we use LeftHand 4500 SAN).

Apparently, during the rebuild, bad blocks may have been copied into the volume.

The ESXi host sees the volume, but it does not show the vmfs filesystem, so I can't get to the guests.  HP wants me to run a chkdisk or fsck on the volume to repair it.

I have no idea how to do that.  Any thoughts?

HP DL360 G4 - Noisy fans

$

My HP ProLiant DL360 G4 has really noisy fans and I think they are working at 80-100% (my guess). I've searched the forum and understand that I need drivers for HP health status.

So I downloaded this version:

VMware ESXi 4.1 Update 1 Installable HP Customized ISO Image

4.1_U1_Apr_2011_ESXi_HD-USB-SDImgeInstlr_Z7550_00096.iso
File size: 430,830 KB
File type: iso
MD5SUM: 60f66fdc31c8d4ef899f97d6d7deab24

But it didn't reduce the fan speed after installation. Should I configure it, or should I install additional software on the VMware server? Or is it a BIOS-setting thing?

Please tell me how to solve this. I'm totally lost and got headache by now.

Thanks in advance!

PS. A datacenter solution is not an option right now.
