Unable to add new LUN's

Good Day All

I'm getting the below error when trying to add new LUN to my ESX Cluster. I just updated my Host servers with Update 2.

Call "HostStorageSystem.RetrieveDiskPartitionInfo" for object "storageSystem-344"

I have a ESXi VM but do not know the password to the system. I also do not know the password for the VSphere Client. The IT person who used to be here is deceased. We are moving buildings. What can I do?

We are moving the network to a new building.  I have no way of getting the password for the ESXi machine or the VSphere Client.  (I can't even figure out if we do have support because I do not have access to that documentation.)  Am I able to shut down the machines in the server room, move them over to the new facility, fire them up, and expect to work?  Just like everything else I believe you have to log in to the machine for it to work.  What are my options?  I am new to the ESXi system.  I don't have the passwords and need to move this network.  Please help ASAP!

ESXi 4.1 Update 3 panics CentOS 6 guests

I'm running VMware vSphere 4 Essentials on three almost identically configured hosts with a mix of guests including Windows 2003 and 2008 as well as CentOS 5 and 6.

Recently I installed Update 3 on one of the hosts. The updated host runs Windows and CentOS 5 (kernel 2.6.18-308.13.1.el5 i686) VMs fine, but two CentOS 6 VMs (kernel 2.6.32-279.5.2.el6.x86_64) I tried refuse to come up. They display the GRUB menu just fine, but the kernel panics immediately with "early exception 0d". After moving the VM back to the host without update 3 it comes up fine again.

Any ideas how to fix or even start debugging this?

Btw, all my CentOS 6 VMs are 64 bit. Windows and CentOS 5 VMs come in both 32 and 64 bit flavours. Both 32 and 64 bit Windows VMs run fine on the updated host. So far I haven't tried a 64 bit CentOS 5 VM.

Fastest Way to Copy 1.7TB Datastore

$

Problem: I need to copy 1.7TB of data off a local disk datastore on an ESXi 4.1 box to a USB external drive and ship that cross-country. Datastore just contains about a dozen VMs and their related files. Local disk is a pile of 600GB SAS in a RAID5.

I've tried a few methods and all have been painfully slow or just flat out did not work. All tests done with same ~40GB VM.

1) Laptop. USB connected. Laptop on GigE network, same switch as ESXi server. Copy using Datastore Browser. 40GB file took 32 minutes which translated to the full 1.7TB would be around 22 hours.

2) Attached USB to server [IBM 3850 X5] and mounted it on a guest. Copy starts out fast then gets insanely slow to the point where the time remaining keeps going up to well over an hour before being canceled. Looking at performance logs you can see it spike high in disk reads and then goes nearly flat. We're talking 86,563 KBps at highest but then drops down to 2000-4000 KBps and stays there. Copy method was Datastore Browser.

3) Attached USB to server [IBM 3850 X5] and mounted it on a guest. Tried Veeam's FastSCP and got great initial transfer speeds until it tapered off identical to #2.

On both items 2 and 3 when I tried with smaller files [~2GB ISO] it would fly through to the end fine but hang at 99% forever. Very odd there as well.

Remote site so my "helper" to move the USB around is gone for the day but will try Veeam on laptop with laptop connected to USB in morning.

Any clue why 2-3 start GREAT but then go into the tank and stay there? That seems like it would be the most direct method since it avoids all network traffic. The hanging at the end part is also troublesome.

Any other methods I should be looking at?

Thanks!

Handles for block devices in ESX/ESXi 4.x hosts

$

Hi Everyone,

I'll start at the bottome line: I'm writing an ESX/ESXi 4.x kernel module that needs to be able to get information about block devices installed on the host. The flow of events should as follows (the entire thing is at host level):

1. A user chooses a device and run a CLI tool with that device name

2. The tool sends the device identification to the kernel object vi ioctl

3. The kernel object gets the infomration, and returns the answer in the ioctl.

In Linux, the process is obvious - get the major/minor of the device, and get the device data according to those numbers. In ESXi, however things are a bit different - there are no /dev/sdX files to stat and get the major/minor pair from.

So, the question is - how does one gets handles for block devices in ESXi machines? Is it still major/minor? or is it something else? If it still major/minor (I suspect it is), how can I get them?

Any help is welcome!

Thanks,

Omer

Can I delete this datastore and extend the other ?

I would like to delete the 'VMware OS' datastore  and use that space to increase the 'MainStorage' datastore as the VM is running out of space on that one. Is that possible.

Complete newbie to ESX so unsure if it can be done without wiping out the box :-)

Version is 4.0.0

Grazie

Hello, I use the following components to create a host on which to install ESXi 4

Motherboard ASUS M2NPV-VM

Processor AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+

RAM 4Gb

DVD SATA

HD SATA2 300Gb

I tested the site go.wmare but the compatibility test only indicates that the PC is not compatible. I downloaded the CD but in this case during the test hangs.

Both the motherboard is the processor are contained in the list of components compatible with the release.

How can I do to get information about which component is blocking the installation?

Thanks

enabling VT on HP DL380 G4

I've read a bunch of threads and searched google for a couple hours last night.  The processor I have I am about 95% sure supports VT.  However, in the bios there is no mention of it and in ESXi it says I can't install anything 64 bit because the processor doesnt support VT.  I can't really find any info about the processor, other than it is a 2.8GHz dual core xeon with 800MHz FSB.  It is stuck to the heat sink really good and even held in with plastic so I really dont want to take it off.  With that info it would lead me to believe it is this processor:  http://ark.intel.com/products/27225/Intel-Xeon-Processor-7030-%282M-Cache-2_80-GHz-800-MHz-FSB%29  there are some HP part numbers on it, but the number on the bottom says 2800DP/4M/800.  Additionally, I can't find ANY dual core xeon processors that don't support it VT.  I updated the bios to what I think is the latest version, but they dont have a bios section on it for some reason.  It lists the bios for OS...  Anyone have any ideas?

VM grew to 258GB on datastore formatted with a 1M block size

I have an ESXi 4.1 server (VMFS 3.33) , stand alone, older server, hosting a single VM. When I created the server, I made the local datastore a 1MB block size because the VM would never grow above 256GB. As of a few days ago, our backups started failing with the following message:

Create virtual machine snapshot vmname

File  vmname.vmx is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore

I checked the VM files and the vmname.vmdk file was more than 256GB.

I cannot storage vMotion this VM somewhere else being a standalone server, I cannot add storage to this server as it is old and has no more room for hard drives. I guess my only option is to do an in place upgrade of this host to ESXi v5.1 and have the VMFS level go from 3 to 5. I am hesitant to do this with no good backup for at least a week.

Anyway, does anyone know HOW this VM grew to greater than 256GB in the first place? How is it still running if the system should technically not be able to recognize the file(s)?

Thank for your time all.

Hi All.

I am trying to install esxi 4.1. I keep freezing at the "Loading module usb".  I have an asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard, w/ 8 gig of Gskill DDR3 Ram.. i also have an AMD 1055T processor. I have researched as much as i could and thought I had all the issues identified for the install.

I have disabled 4 of the 6 cores, turned off USB 3.0, then turned off all on the board services, IE: esata, sound, NIC. etc etc

None of this has worked. I have read quite a few times where people have had these chipsets working IE: 890GTD and SB850

I also have a Raid 1 set up with my VelociRaptors. I am not quite sure what is going on. I work on ESX all the time, and I have not enountered an issue I was not able to over come.

Anyone have some suggestoins?

MS ISA/TMG on a VMware ESXi platform security?

$

Hi,

I've started last year virtualizing all our servers to VMware ESXi 4.1 and all running perfect.

The only server i didnt virtualized was the Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010 (TMG Server).

But Friday our server collapsed and i have no choise but to restore a backup from TMG on a ESXi server.

That then got connected to the internet to work as a gateway/firewall in about 1 hour this was done.

But i always had this idea that it not great security wise to put a firewall/gateway server onto a ESXi host with direct connection to the internet.

Ofcouse the NIC is attached to only this guest (TMG server),

But is my concern really ok? or is there no direct security issues to have my ESXi connected directly to the ISP??

If there is no security problems it will be easy to just continue using this host and no addictional cost on hardware.

Best Regards

Server Monitoring Tools - Advice, Direction, help please

Hello there,

First off let me say ESXI is amazing and flat out works awesome!  I'm a nub when it comes to vmware and I just finished upgrading/migrating our entire company from a SBS2000 shop to Server 2008 standard VM's hosted in ESXI.  Let me tell you, setting up the ESXI hosts was the easiest part of that whole ordeal lol.  I'm looking for a tool that can monitor ESXI hosts and send alerts via email/sms and or potentially shut down VM's.  For example:  Say the AC unit dies on an extremely hot day on the weekend and our machines are overheating.  Is there a tool that will alert via smtp/sms and initiate a shut down command to our VM's and then the host PMs?  I'm finding it hard to grasp how this is possible because I don't see how software could run in a VM and be able to "access" the actual ESXI host hardware conditions..  At a minimum I'm looking for a tool that can send alerts via email/sms if there is a problem so I'd be able to address the issue before any damage occured.

We currently have two ESXI 4.0 hosts on Dell PowerEdge T610 Servers.  I used the ESXI version specifically for Dell servers (if that helps).

Three virtual machines, two Server 2008 Standard and one Server 2008 R2.  If you know of any tools that would help me achieve what I've mentioned above I would greatly appreciate it.  I did a fair amount of searching on the web but did not find a solution to fit all our needs yet.  It can be open source or payware.

Thanks for your time,

Dustin

I have licensed my x3400 server with vSphere 4.1 essent. plus license and got the the hypevisor with an usb memory key.

My question is , do I need to boot with the ESXi 4.1 cd and install ESXi on the usb stick first and then boot with it, or it is preinstalled alredy,

because when I plug the stick in the server and set the boot options in the bios to usb storage or embedded hypervisor it won't boot from it.

Am I doing something wrong , thanks in advance.

Game server hosting in ESXi?

$

I've been searching high and low for advice on hosting game servers as virtual machines on ESXi. I've found 2 posts in the archives that are similar, but neither came to a helpful conclusion. I'm attempting to host a Minecraft server, and possibly a Counter-Strike: Source server. The server itself is 2x dual core AMD Opterons, 8gb RAM, 300gb SCSI HD, so it should be able to handle at least one of those. When I try to play on my Minecraft server, I get tons of latency and other network related problems. So that's all I can think of to put in as a first post. I'll provide any other information you need if I forgot to put it in here. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as I have been trying to get this to work for a couple weeks.

Unable to add the virtual machine to the inventory

Hi,

Recently I come across issue while restarting the virtual machine. So I have unregistered the virtual machine and when I try to add it to inventory the option was grayed out.

So I tried to add through ESXi command, after adding it, it didn't show the VM in Vcenter inventory.

Hence I created 1 more vmx file, now I have the option to add it to the Inventory - But the error is "A virtual machine or template having the same  name is already registered."

In the Inventory, I couldn't find the name.. Even in esxi servers too.

Experts, Could you please help me to resolve this issue now? Thanks in advance.
