All VM's rebooting for no reason same time every Saturday

Hey Guys

I've got an IBM x3650 M2 server running VMware vSphere 4 Hypervisor ESXi 4.1.

I'm running 5X vm's (all server 2008 - DC + TS + Exchange + 3CX + SQL) on it and it had been happily going along until recently.

I had a hard drive go in the raid set about 5 weeks ago. That got replaced by IBM and the raid set rebuilt ok. Everything was stable.

It was about time for me to run some updates, so 3 weeks ago (on a Friday night) I updated Exchange 2010 to SP3 with rollup 6. I also installed the latest version of 2X Application gateway on the TS and installed the latest windows updates on the 3CX server.

The 3CX server didn't like the updates and after the reboot the network card wouldn't connect. A few reboots then it was ok.

I finished everything about 6am that morning. Everything was running well, Went to sleep and woke up that afternoon to a notification that the VM's had rebooted at 2.45pm that Saturday.

I checked the IBM host and that hadn't rebooted, no errors in the logs.

I checked the VMware Console, just had a restart notification in the events. I checked the VM logs from the datastore and it just said the VM's had restarted.

Everything looked ok, so I figured just a random restart.

However, next Saturday at 2.45pm the exact same thing happened, at the exact same time!

I waited a week and sure enough at 2.45pm on Saturday same thing.

I am at a loss as to what's causing this. I couldn't find any scheduled tasks that might be doing it and if it was hardware I figured the IBM host should be restarting.

It's most perplexing. Has anyone seen anything like this before? What do you guys think might be happening?

Kind Regards

Aaron

Cannot open the disk or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: No such device or address.

Hi, this looks like a helpful community, so I thought I would get some input on a situation I walked into.

Here's the story. This school has three ESXi 4 host machines all sharing drive space via NFS to a Slackware 14 box. The Slackware box has a raid10 with 4x2TB drives for 4TB of total space. I receive a call a few weeks ago that all the guests machines went down (all run either Windows Server 2003/2008) due to an error about the data store being full. So, I go over and indeed the Slackware Raid was full and the guest that takes all the space had 50 snapshots in it, three of which were missing (APOC-000015-delta.vmdk, 31 and 32). I believe someone removed them because I came back after a while, and the raid wasnt full anymore. This allowed all the other guests to start except of course the one missing three delta files. The cause for all the snapshots was Veeam as we found out, it would start and then lose network connectivity after so long (at least that was what the Veeam logs indicated). So, as this is an important file server with essentially no backup and missing snapshots, I started looking at file recovery software and came across testdisk/photorec. I started the process and it took three days, but it *looks* like it retrieved the correct file sizes for the three delta files when compared to what they were before they were deleted. We were able to gain more disk space by removing an old guest machine no one was using anymore to make room for me to put the recovered files back in place. So, I did that and renamed them according to what I thought they were. Now, I am receiving the error 'Cannot open the disk /vmfs/volumes/59b1ea0e-4f76f242/APOC/APOC-000050.vmdk or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: No such device or address.' The log shows it opens all 50 vmdk files successfully, although it's clear that doesn't seem to be the case. The line 'can't create deltadisk node...' is where I see it stops in the log, not sure what it means.

Apologies as I typed this out kind of fast, so I guess what I want to know if there is a way to tell if the -delta files I recovered are indeed valid (not corrupt) and if there's any steps I can take to resolve said error message above. Attached are the .vmx, .vmxf., .nvram and the latest vmware.log from the server folder.

Thanks for any insight on this, it's been a learning experience for everyone.

Netgear ReadyNAS device disconnects (NFS)

Hello again everybody,

I'm trying to copy a couple of 50GB Virtual machines from the primary hard drives datastore to the newly mounted Netgear ReadyNAS device via NFS.  I first tried it via the VSphere Client interface, then from command line via NFS.  Both times thus far, I get to around 15 or 20GB of copying when the ReadyNAS device disconnects and then becomes inactive - unmounted.  I can not remount it unless I reboot the ReadyNAS device, even though I can still ssh into the ReadyNAS or web console into it.  All fingers are pointing to the ReadyNAS device as the culprit, maybe too much for it to handle over NFS.  Any ideas why I cannot complete this copy to a ReadyNAS device?  I'm ultimately trying to reconfigure the RAID on this server so I need to copy the VM's off and eventually back to the reconfigured server.

I checked for any and all firmware updates on the NAS device so it's on the latest version.

Thanks,

Jim

ESXi 4.1 & Dell Management Agents

Setting up a new host with ESXi 4.1 and wondering if anyone has had luck getting Dell OMSA installed?

This link was provided by Dell tech but am having trouble getting the install script to run with the following error:

./srvadmin-install.sh: line 44: function: not found

Any suggestions on how to get this stuff installed?  It'd be nice to be able to manage the RAID stuff without having to boot into BIOS.

Thanks in advance!

Adaptec 6405 poor write performance

Hi,

My System specs are as follows:

CPUs: 2x Intel Xeon E5620

Motherboard: Intel S5520HC
Ram: 12x Kingston KVR1066D3D4R7S/4GI for a total of 48GB
USB: 4GB Kingston DataTraveler for booting ESXi 4.1
RAID Controller: Adaptec 6405 (firmware build 18301) with AFM-600 NAND FLASH MEMORY BACKUP for 6 SERIES
HDD: 4x Seagate Constellation ES SAS 1TB ST31000424SS (firmware 0006)

After suffering poor write performance the first time I went ahead and produced a fresh install of ESXi 4.1 Update 1 installed to the usb stick listed above.

I then installed the VMware ESX/ESXi 4.1 Driver CD for PMC Sierra aacraid from http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/dt_esx41_pmc_aacraid_11728000/ZCV0YnR0aipiZColcA==

After installing and restarting ESXi I could then see the raid array and create a datastore.

Currently the raid is configured as a RAID 10 I have tried RAID 6 with the same poor write performance. Write Cache is forced on and ZMM is at optimal charge!

I have been testing performance with Crystal Disk Mark running in a Windows 2008 R2 x64 VM.

Sequential Read is 286MB/s and Sequential Write is 28MB/s.

On another system which is an i7 950 with Adaptec 5805 with BBU running ESXi 4.1 with the same hard drives but configured in a RAID6.

Sequential Read is 246MB/s and Sequential Write is 207MB/s.

I would like to get the 6405 writing atleast 5x faster than its currently operating instead of sending it off as ewaste!

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer me.

Update: Tried Paravirtual SCSI Controller and a vdisk on the Windows vm for a bit of fun. The test results are 325MB/s Sequential Read and 28MB/s Sequential Write.

vmkernel syslog notice question

We port syslog messages from our ESxi 4.1.0 348481 servers to Kiwi, we use HP dl380G6 Servers.

In the syslog we see frequently the message vmkernel hpilo 0000:01:04.2: Open could not dequeue a packet

We are wondering what this message is about, after searching the internet i cannot find any information about this notice.

Does anybody know something about this and wherther this is normal?

Boot manager error 0xc0000225

I made and attempt to convert a virtual machine running windows server 2008 r2 over to the ESXi platform which has worked for many virtual machines up until this point. I ran the VMware converter from inside the VM and pointed it to the ESXi host. The conversion completed but upon starting it, I get a “boot manager error, 0xc0000225”. To troubleshoot so far I have tried running a chkdsk /f which did not solve anything, as well as running the startup recovery but it fails with the message below.

Root cause found:

Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem

Repair Action: System files integrity check  and repair

Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490

Is anyone encountering a similar issue or can anyone help me out on this?

Cancelling a copy task in ESXi vsphere Client

Hi All

I am pretty new to ESX but have bene using workstation, and server for some time.  My department have now moved to ESXi and I am copying the VM images from one server to another.

I wanted know is there a way to cancel a copy task in vsphere client once its in progress?  I noticed that when I select the task the opion to cancel the task is greyed out.  I  connect to the server via ssh and ran a ps -ef|more but could not see anything that resembled a copy process.

Also the copy and move option seems to be very slow considering I am copying from one vmfs file system to another vmfs filesystem.

Thanks

Hi,

We are running a VMWare Esxi 5.1 with 3 VMs for around 4 month with no issues. Suddenly from today we are seeing datastore1 is inactive. Due to this we are unable to access our VMs through console. Getting "unable to connect to the mks virtual machine config file does not exist"  while trying to access VM. Now, how can we re-active the datastore. Please help!!!

Ways to convert VMDK files

$

Hi,

We have recently had a server failure and I have decided to rebuild the server and put ESXi 4 on it.

However, the backups I have of the old machines are on NTFS formatted drives (not USB, they are in our backup machine) which means that they are unable to be mounted (as far as I can tell) under ESXi.

The problem I have is that the VMDK files I have are the older version so not compatible with the curernt ESXi. I know I can convert them using vmkfstools (with the -i switch from memory) but I have two problems with this. Firstly I have to get them on to the ESXi server in the first instance, and since we are looking at about 5Tb of data it is going to take FOREVER (been running for 2 days now - still nowhere near complete) and the second is even if I do get them onto the server, I will need another 5Tb of drive space to convert them into, which I don't have.

So my question(s)

1. Is the really not anyway to mount an NTFS drive (not USB)  under ESXi - that way I could just convert from the backup drive to the datastore (nice and easy)

2. Is there an offline converter for VMDK files?

3. Is there a way to change the NTFS drive to a readable format by ESXi (ext3/resierfs/something) without losing the data

4. Is there a way to optimise the network transfers maybe?

5. Is there another solution I could look at

Many thanks in advance

Unable to add the virtual machine to the inventory

Hi,

Recently I come across issue while restarting the virtual machine. So I have unregistered the virtual machine and when I try to add it to inventory the option was grayed out.

So I tried to add through ESXi command, after adding it, it didn't show the VM in Vcenter inventory.

Hence I created 1 more vmx file, now I have the option to add it to the Inventory - But the error is "A virtual machine or template having the same  name is already registered."

In the Inventory, I couldn't find the name.. Even in esxi servers too.

Experts, Could you please help me to resolve this issue now? Thanks in advance.

VM becomes unresponsive, some vCPUs are 100% utilized

$
0
0

Hi all,

I have a cluster of about 10 hosts and 150 VMs.  There are times when a Linux VM becomes unresponsive.  The vCPU usage skyrockets and flat-lines at 100% until the VM is reset.  The guest is not pingable and the console doesn't display anything nor respond to keyboard input.  I've waited to see if the problem goes away on it's own (up to 4 hours), but it does not - a hard reset of the VM is the only solution.

It happens to various VMs, but most frequently to those running 32-bit Debian 6.0.  The problem is not isolated to one VM, but there is a set of four VMs that experience the problem more often than others.

Some of the VMs have 8 vCPUs, but some only have 1 or 2.  VMware support keeps saying the number of vCPUs should be reduced to 1 with more added as needed, but we've gone through that already - our VMs have the number of vCPUs that they need.  I looked closely at the graphs of the 8 vCPU guests while the problem is happening.  Sometimes there were 4 vCPUs pegged and 4 were idle, sometimes 5 were pegged, etc.  There doesn't appear to be a pattern.

Our environment consists of Dell PowerEdge servers (1950, R810, R900) connected to an EMC Clariion SAN using 4Gb FC.  All hosts are running ESXi, either 4.1 or 5.0.  VMs are stored on various LUNs on the SAN using a range of RAID levels (5, 6, 10).  At one point I thought the SAN utilization might be the source of the problem, so I setup a dedicated RAID-10 RAID group with a single LUN which contained only one VM.  That VM was still affected.  Also, in terms of SAN controller utilization, it's usually around 15% and only peaks at 30%.

All of the VMs use the vmxnet3 vNIC.  On one occasion, after resetting the VM, I looked at the kernel log and it displayed some vmxnet3 messages which led me to believe the problem may be caused by http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2005717.  I moved some VMs to the host running ESXi v5.0 and the problem still occurred, so that theory was debunked.  Also, this problem has happened quite a few times but those vmxnet3 kernel messages only showed up on one occasion.

All VMs are running VMware tools.  Some have the open-vm-tools Debian package, some use the official VMware version.  I enabled verbose logging in VMware Tools but that didn't return any helpful info.

There is no gradual increase in CPU/memory/utilization of any kind which would indicate an over-worked VM.  It will be humming along just fine and then out of the blue the CPU will immediately spike and flatline at 100%.  The guests are monitored using cacti and sar.  Neither of these tools report any utilization increase leading up to the event.  Also, there is no pattern regarding when the problem happens.  It could be in the middle of the workday when load is high or in the middle of the night when load is practically nil.

I've experienced this problem off and on since I started using VMware several years ago.  I'm just bringing it up now because it seems to be happening more often lately.

Since the problem cannot be reproduced on-demand or at least at regular intervals, it's difficult to determine what's causing it.

Here are the facts:
- It happens on various VMs running different applications, some are affected more than others.
- The guest OS is always Linux.  It's happened on Debian 5.0, Debian 6.0, and Gentoo.  It may affect Windows guests but we have very few of those.
- It happens on various hosts with differing hardware configurations.
- It happens on ESXi 4.1 and 5.0.
- It happens on when the VM is stored on a Clariion SAN, regardless of which RAID type is used (5, 6, 10).
- It happens at random times, regardless of the guest utilization level.
- The guest doesn't "know" what happens.  There are no log entries indicating anything before or after the event (except in one isolated vmxnet3 case which I explained).
- It has been happening more often lately.  It's hard to provide exact numbers, but it seems like it used to happen maybe once every 3 months.  Now it happens about every other week.
- There haven't been any significant changes to the hardware or software infrastructure which correlate with this problem.

Now, based on all of that information, logic tells me that something is wrong with VMware.  It's the only factor I can find which is common in all situations.  I opened a case and have been frustrated with the help VMware has provided.

1.  I called while the problem was happening.  A tech logged into the host and viewed CPU stats with esxtop.  Then he put me on hold.  I assumed he was looking something up in the KB or asking an associate for advice.  5 minutes later he came back and said Debian 6.0 is only supported on hosts running ESXi 5.0 (it was running on a 4.1 host).  He would provide no further support whatsoever.  Alright, I understand that, it's not in the support matrix.  But spending 10 minutes looking at the problem would have been appreciated.
2.  I upgraded one of the hosts to 5.0 and experienced the same problem a few days later.  I called support again and mentioned the fact that it is now running in a supported configuration.  He ran esxtop and noted the high vCPU usage.  He stated there wasn't any more he could do, it must be a problem with the application running inside the guest.  I specifically asked if he could run strace to see what the runaway processes were doing, he said no.  I also asked if the VM could be forcibly crashed (coredump) to examine the aftermath.  He said no and insisted the problem lies with some application running in the guest.  His recommendations were to reduce the number of vCPUs, and/or schedule regular reboots of the guests.  I had a good chuckle over the latter, then became dismayed when I realized he was being dead serious.
3.  I escalated the case to a supervisor who repeated the technicians statements - there's nothing more VMware can do, something is wrong on our side.  I explained that not all of the affected VMs run the same application - and there is no pattern.

Honestly that just doesn't make sense to me, the evidence points to a bug or some other problem in VMware.

Anyway, I'm an open-minded person and accept the fact that it may indeed be a problem with our internal application.  How can I troubleshoot this further to find the source of this problem?

I do have a 'test subject' available for poking and prodding.  While the problem was affecting one of the VMs, I suspended it, copied the entire VM directory to another volume, then resumed the original VM.  CPU usage spiked right back up to where it used to be so I reset the guest.  But I do have the copy of the suspended VM which may be resumed at any time to reproduce the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Asterisk using Vm-Ware

I've been doing research to see about virtualizing our asterisk servers. And most of the information I have googled and searched on these forums are all roughly 2 years or more old. Most the information I have found says you can virtualize asterisk and SIP/IAX will work fine, but anything that requires hardware (Digium T1/PRI cards, Analog line card, etc) is a no go with ESXI. And on the same premise any feature that requires hardware timing has issues.

Since all of the information is two years old and considering how popular asterisk and its derivites are nowadays as an easy cheap and highly effective (and resellable) VoIP/PBX/IVR/ect solution I would like to think these issues had been resolved, but since I can't find a concerete answer one way or the other after a good bit of googleing and forum searching, I figured I'd ask here.

Can asterisk be virtualized and use Hardware add on cards such as digital T1/PRI card, analog line cards, etc with the use of the newest ESXi 4 version virtual host?

Invalid Configuration for device "11"

I've been reading a lot on invalid configuration for devices 0, 1, and 4, but my error is on "11".  It happens when I create a new VM based on a snapshot of an existing.  My question is, how do I know to what device the error is occurring?  That would at least help me troubleshoot where the issue lies.

I thought it was due to the fact that I had a floppy image attached, since that was the 11th device from the top of the list.  But after disconnecting the floppy, and later removing the floppy drive complete, device 11 still eludes me.  Any help would be great.  Thanks all!

Communication between VLAN lost for 10-20 seconds after VMOTION

Hi everyone,

We currently switched our infrastructure from a flat network into a VLAN designed network. All workstations stay on one VLAN (20), all ESX hosts and VM are on VLAN30, and iSCSI traffic is on VLAN40. We use Force10 S4810 and EqualLogic. All ESXi hosts are connected using a tagged/trunk 10G connection to the switch.

Every since we switch over, I encountered a very very odd problem.

Everytime I vMotion a VM (on VLAN30)  from one host to another host, I will lost about 10 pings from my computer to the VM. All servers, which are on the same VLAN30, can ping to it fine, no problem.

only the ping from VLAN20 to VLAN30 got disrupted for about 10 seconds or so.

I've done some research online and everyone are pointed to ARP table on the switches. I looked at the configuration, i don't see much I can do on the switches.

Can you help me? 10 pings lost are not OK once we fully operate in this new design.

Thanks guys

The management agents later failed on host 14, and it lost connection to vcenter, plus the vmotion aborted. One of my co workers was able to get host 14 working again, after running

esxcfg-rescan vmhba32 and services.sh restart

Other VMs vmotioned okay to host 10, while two did not. what kind of issues can cause the vim.fault.toomanywrites condition?

Vcenter had the following suggestions:

Possible causes:

Cause: The agent cannot send heartbeats because of a networking related failure on host

Cause: The agent failed to update the configuration file on host

Cause: The agent failed to save the configuration file to disk on host

Cause: The provisioning module failed to load. As a result, all provisioning operations will fail on host.

ESXI version is 4.1.0, 260247

Any suggestions for checks appreciated.
