I have running vSphere 4.1  EE + allocated to 5 ESXi Servers.

The VM is on a Dell 2950 that has 2 sockets, with 4 cores per socket, and 8 logical processors

I am trying to move the VM that is powered down to a Dell R710 that  has 2 sockets, with 6 cores per socket, and 24 logical

I am not sure what is going on,, Is it the CPU differences?

thanks

ISO won't boot on Dell R710

Hi Everyone,

New user to VMWare vSphere.  I'm having trouble booting the install CD that i've downloaded.  The server is a Dell R710 and when i tell it to boot from on-board optical drive it just seems to skip by it and continuing to the next option (raid array or NIC), i don't even see a flash from the DVD ROM drive...

I've tried burning the ISO on a Mac, on a Windows 7 Workstation with different burning programs, tried burning at faster speeds and slower ones, tried different media such as CD-RW or just CDR, getting no joy!

I have gotten it to boot once to ESXi during my early testing phase, but the disk I used then is no good now (it was ESXi 4.1, same version, but has a lot of scratches and stuff on it now, just gets to the ISOLINUX text and stops)

Any advice?

Thanks, Mike

Swapping hard drives to change/increase size of Datastore

$

Hi:

I have an ESXi 4.1 host with 2x146GB RAID1 array (datastore1) and 4x300GB RAID5 array (datastore2).  I need more space so I plan to replace 2x146GB with 2x2TB.  I'll first move VMs from datastore1 to datastore2, then shut down machine, swap drives and build new array.

  • Do I need to remove datastore1 from ESXi cfg. before I physically remove the drives, or will ESXi startup gracefully and allow me to remove the datastore?
  • I will be able to add the new datastore (2x2TB) to ESXi, ya, i.e. ESXi should see the array once initialized on the machine?
  • The existing datastores have block size set to 1MB so max vmdk is 256GB.  I want the new datastore to have 8MB block size so I can have larger vmdks.  I think I can set the datastore block size when creating it, ya, i.e. the same ESXi install can have datastores with different block sizes, ya?

Thanks so much for any insights you have!

Hello All,

I have just installed a test version of ESXi 4.  As part of a VM setup you can add a USB controller.  Does this mean that the VM in question will be able to see USB storage plugged into it.  Basically I have a VM of XP and I want to add an external drive but I cant seem to do this. As it has a USB controller what am I doing wrong??

thanks

Boot manager error 0xc0000225

I made and attempt to convert a virtual machine running windows server 2008 r2 over to the ESXi platform which has worked for many virtual machines up until this point. I ran the VMware converter from inside the VM and pointed it to the ESXi host. The conversion completed but upon starting it, I get a “boot manager error, 0xc0000225”. To troubleshoot so far I have tried running a chkdsk /f which did not solve anything, as well as running the startup recovery but it fails with the message below.

Root cause found:

Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem

Repair Action: System files integrity check  and repair

Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490

Is anyone encountering a similar issue or can anyone help me out on this?

vmware hyperthreading total resources

$

Hi,

I'm after a simple explination on how ESXi 4.0 works with hyperthreaded CPU.

eg.

Intel Xeon X5560 Quad @ 2.8GHz

CPU Cores: 8 CPUs x 2.793GHz

Processor Sockets: 2

Cores per Socket: 4

Logical Processors: 16

Hyperthreading: Active

Using ESXi 4.0 Free, with 2 CPU license

I'm using vSphere client.

Why is my total capacity only 8 x 2.793 = 22.344GHz (ie why is it not Logical CPU(16) x 2.793GHz)

If I create 4 VM each with 4 vCPU, ie a total of 16 vCPU. Then run a cpuhog on each VM I only have around 23GHz being used. each of the 16 cpu under the performance tab is running at just over 1GHz, I would have thought this should be closer to the 2.8GHz..

Thanks,

Jason

I have two problems.

My three users that are on TS (Virtual Server 1) have consistently experienced slowness accessing the applications on Physical Server A. It is considerably slower than a user accessing the same applications from a XP desktop.

Users on XP desktops accessing the DB on Virtual Server 2 are seeing slowness in the DB that did not exist on an older Windows 2003 Server with 2 Gb ram.

I feel that it is a network bottleneck, but both physical servers are plugged in to the same Cisco 2960G. I noticed that the drivers that install in Windows Server have a date of 06/21/06 and are different than what is actually in the Server. I understand that it is in an emulation mode, but is there a way to update the driver in the Virtual Server? I have also seen somewhere that the driver should be E1000e and mine show E1000, not sure how to change that either.

vSwitches are setup in vSphere 1 Physical NIC -> Virtual Machine Port Group -> 1 Virtual Server

Any help would be appreciated, and I am ok with you tearing apart what I have done and questioning it. This is the first Virtual Server that I have setup.

Help with esxtop

I need some help with esxtop please.  I want to record some disk stats.  Here is what I'm doing and what is happening.

1.  I enter esxtop and press "u"

2.  I then press "f" to change my fields and select the metrics I want.

3.  I then press "W" to save the information

4.  I then go back to esxtop and press "ctrl-c" to exit.

5.  I then run "esxtop -b -d 5 -n 500 > esxtop.csv.

Once the stats have been captured I open it in perfmon I have all these different stats -  I'm not interested in the cpu/memory/etc.  I only want the disk stats to be captured.  Did I do something wrong with steps 1-5?  is pressing "crtl-c" reseting the information?  In fact, is pressing ctrl-c to exit the problem?  Any advice would be great!

I am having a problem with ESXi 4 that i cant figure out. I have enabled the iscsi feature and have pointed it to the correct place. But when i do a rescan for new storage it doesnt bring anything up. If i click on the "Paths" button it shows the Lun number correctly but under Status it shows as DEAD with a red diamond. What am i missing here? This is the ESXi 4 60-day trial version...im guessing it is licensed for iSCSI use. Anyone have any ideas?

[Solved] iSCSI write performance to Openfiler 2.99 terrible, 2 MB/s

$

I've been struggling with a new Openfiler 2.99/ESXi 4.1 installation for several days, and  am in need of some further help or suggestions. My write performance  with an iSCSI volume to an ESXi 4.1 guest is about 2 MB/s.  Read  performance is fine at about 75 MB/s.  With write performance like that,  the machines are just crawling along.  I had a number of guest VMs  installed locally on the internal (non-RAID) HD of the host ESXi  machine, and was getting good performance - read and write in the 70  MB/s range.  When I migrated one over to the new OF setup, write  performance is essentially non-existent!

The server is a new HP  N40L, with (4) 2TB Seagate Barracude ST2000DL003-9VT1 drives.  6 GB of  RAM, and a 2-port BCM5709 gigabit NIC.  OF 2.99 is installed to a USB  drive, and as soon as it was installed I used the system update function  to update all packages.  OF is connected to the ESXi host through a  Trend S80 switch that supports jumbo frames, although I'm not using  them.  There's nothing else on the switch.

All 4 drives are  configured in a single volume group, RAID 5 w/ 5.73 TB of usable space.   There is currently only 1 iSCSI volume, 1 TB in size, and a single  LUN.  I checked hdparm locally on the OF box, and am getting buffered  disk reads of the individual disks of 145 MB/s.  Buffered reads from  /md0 are 320 MB/s.

I initially configured the vSwitch and  vmnic for jumbo frames, 9000 MTU.  During troubleshooting though I set  them back to 1500, and changed OF to 1500 to eliminate a jumbo frames  issue or a switch issue.  No improvement.

I turned off flow  control for tx, rx, and autonegotiate.  No change.  I verified that all  of the iSCSI parameters in the software initiator match those in OF.  No  change.

I'm really out of ideas at this point.  Any suggestions for things to check/change would be greatly appreciated.

Dell Poweredge 2850 and ESXi 4.1

$

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850 with 12GB RAM and dual processors hyperthread with 350GB of diskspace.

This box was originally installed with Redhat Linux ES 5.4 64bits and CentOS 5.5 64bits OS without any issues so I know the processor supports 64-bits.

I then installed VMWare ESXi version 4.1 on the Dell Poweredge 2850 without any issues.

I then created a few VM instances that I want to install CentOS 5.5 64bits.  During the VMware instance setup, I get this:

msg.cpuid.notLongmodeQuestionFmt:This veritual is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems.
However, 64-bit operation is not possible.
Longmode is disabled for this virtual machine.
For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152
Continue without 64-bit support?

Now the question I have is this:  Since VMWare is having issues with 64-bits guest OSes, how come I can install CentOS 5.5 64 bits on this Dell PowerEdge 2850 without any issues.  It seems obvious to me that the PowerEdge 2850 works well with 64bits OS but not ESXi 4.1.

How can I get around this?

Comments?  Thanks in advance.

Virtual Machine IOPS

Hi

I'm looking to get some statistics on vitual machine IOPS ahead of some storage migrations. What is the best way to get the relevent infomation from vCenter? Which counters provide the most accurate indiction of virtual machine disk activity?

Is it worth looking a using something like vmturbo ?

thanks in advance!

HP NC380T Recognized by hardware but not by ESXi

$

0

I'm running ESXi 4.1 Update 3 on a lab machine.

I recently purchased some HP NC380T Dual Gigabit network cards and installed them.

I have no issues seeing the cards in BIOS, and just about everywhere I look in the logs the system is aware the card is there except that they are not assigned a vmnic number.  I expect these ports to be assigned vmnic2 and vmnic3 since the motherboard has two gigabit ethernet ports on it (and they are working fine)

So I'm really at a loss as to why these ports are not being recognized so I can use them in ESXi.  Any insight is appreciated!!!

Please find below additional information which should be helpful in understanding the problem.

Thank you,

Kevin

Only the motherboard ports are shown as NICs.

~ # esxcfg-nics -l

Name    PCI           Driver      Link Speed     Duplex MAC Address       MTU    Description

vmnic0  0000:02:00.00 tg3         Up   1000Mbps  Full   00:1e:8c:51:62:26 1500   Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 Gigabit Ethernet

vmnic1  0000:03:00.00 tg3         Up   1000Mbps  Full   00:1e:8c:51:63:10 1500   Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 Gigabit Ethernet

But lspci is showing that the NIC itself is seen at the PCI level:

~ # lspci | grep vmnic

000:002:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 Gigabit Ethernet [vmnic0]

000:003:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 Gigabit Ethernet [vmnic1]

000:006:04.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation NC380T PCI Express Dual Port Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapt [vmnic2]

000:007:05.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation NC380T PCI Express Dual Port Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapt [vmnic3]

And ethtool is showing the correct PCI addresses and drivers being assigned:

~ # ethtool -i vmnic0

driver: tg3

version: 3.110h.v41.1

firmware-version: 5721-v3.55a

bus-info: 0000:02:00.0

~ # ethtool -i vmnic1

driver: tg3

version: 3.110h.v41.1

firmware-version: 5721-v3.55a

bus-info: 0000:03:00.0

~ # ethtool -i vmnic2

driver: bnx2

version: 2.0.22f.v41.2

firmware-version: bc 1.9.6

bus-info: 0000:06:04.0

~ # ethtool -i vmnic3

driver: bnx2

version: 2.0.22f.v41.2

firmware-version: bc 1.9.6

bus-info: 0000:07:05.0

The following is from /var/log/messages.  I see the error message, but I'm not sure exactly what it means and google didn't help.  What is really odd is that the bnx2-cnic driver appears to be picking these ports up, but I do not see the ports listed in the storage adapters either.

Setting a password age policy on ESXi 5.0 (esxcfg-auth now gone)?

Our customer security policy is to set an age limit on ESXi user accounts. On ESX 4.0 I used esxcfg-auth --passmaxdays=40 but this command is no longer available in ESXi 5.0. Can anyone if there is a simple way to do it without messing about too much at a granular level? I'm really struggling to find this.

I know about Lockdown mode etc. It's a highly secure customer and they specifically want it set rather than rely on Lockdown.

Thanks

Virtual Machine ping but no other network connectivity

Hello,

In order to isolate my production servers from my DMZ servers, I installed ESXi on a computer. That installation is customized with the network drivers and SATA drivers of the server. The DMZ VMs were moved from the production servers using the export method.

Now from the ESXi host:

* I can access the web completely, wget retrieves pages, etc...

From virtual machines on the ESXi host:

* I can ping the local network

* I can ping google, microsoft, vmware, ...

* I can access shares, web, whatever from any machine on the vSwitch to any machine on the vSwitch

But I cannot browse to google, samba to local network shares, ftp, telnet ... If I reload the VMs before export on the production server they work fine.

I tried:

* clean install of a VM, no luck

* modifying the network adapter settings, no luck

* using only one NIC, no luck

* using only one NIC on a separate vSwitch, no luck

Any idea why I would be able to ping whatever I want, but unable to access anything else ?

enabling VT on HP DL380 G4

I've read a bunch of threads and searched google for a couple hours last night.  The processor I have I am about 95% sure supports VT.  However, in the bios there is no mention of it and in ESXi it says I can't install anything 64 bit because the processor doesnt support VT.  I can't really find any info about the processor, other than it is a 2.8GHz dual core xeon with 800MHz FSB.  It is stuck to the heat sink really good and even held in with plastic so I really dont want to take it off.  With that info it would lead me to believe it is this processor:  http://ark.intel.com/products/27225/Intel-Xeon-Processor-7030-%282M-Cache-2_80-GHz-800-MHz-FSB%29  there are some HP part numbers on it, but the number on the bottom says 2800DP/4M/800.  Additionally, I can't find ANY dual core xeon processors that don't support it VT.  I updated the bios to what I think is the latest version, but they dont have a bios section on it for some reason.  It lists the bios for OS...  Anyone have any ideas?

Windows 2008 R2 Server Stop Error 7B After Bare-Metal Restore to VM.

I've been trying to do a bare-metal restore of a physical Windows 2008 R2 Server onto a VM, and although the restore goes just fine, when I restart the VM after the restore, I get a STOP: 0x0000007B error (see attached screen-shot).  I've been able to find all sorts of 'fixes' on-line, but none really fix the problem.  Has anyone else done this and can provide a solution?  Thanks.
