Dell Poweredge 2850 and ESXi 4.1

$

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850 with 12GB RAM and dual processors hyperthread with 350GB of diskspace.

This box was originally installed with Redhat Linux ES 5.4 64bits and CentOS 5.5 64bits OS without any issues so I know the processor supports 64-bits.

I then installed VMWare ESXi version 4.1 on the Dell Poweredge 2850 without any issues.

I then created a few VM instances that I want to install CentOS 5.5 64bits.  During the VMware instance setup, I get this:

msg.cpuid.notLongmodeQuestionFmt:This veritual is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems.
However, 64-bit operation is not possible.
Longmode is disabled for this virtual machine.
For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152
Continue without 64-bit support?

Now the question I have is this:  Since VMWare is having issues with 64-bits guest OSes, how come I can install CentOS 5.5 64 bits on this Dell PowerEdge 2850 without any issues.  It seems obvious to me that the PowerEdge 2850 works well with 64bits OS but not ESXi 4.1.

How can I get around this?

Comments?  Thanks in advance.

vsphere HA failover in progress

I have a warning on my cluster

vsphere Ha failoveri n progress. alarm has been on for a few days. any idea why it does not clear?

The virtual disk is either corrupted or not a supported format.

We've got a 2008 R2 Datacenter SP1 VM that we cannot snapshot.

A manual snapshot from within the vSphere Client shows the following in the Tasks and Events:

The virtual disk is either corrupted or not a supported format.

Our NetBackup software does automated snaphots for VM backups and generates these three errors in the Tasks and Events:

A snaphot operation cannot be performed

Operation timed out

A general system error occurred: Protocol error from VMX.

The VM has two Virtual Disks:

[vmds-standard:default (1)] outhostname/ourhostname-000001.vmdk

[vmds-standard:default (1)] outhostname/outhostname_1-000001.vmdk

The virtual disk files do not appear to have the usual filenames. Instead they look like snapshot files or something similar.

I'm not sure what's going on. Can anybody help?

Encrypting ESXi host with BitLocker

We are being asked to encrypt out exchange server, but we're running into a few issues. For the most part, MS only recommends using BitLocker as the encryption solution, but our Exchange environment is made up of two ESXi hosts and BitLocker doens't support VM bootable drives. However you can encrypt the VM host. I'm not familiar with ESXi, so this may be a stupid question. But if we encrypted the ESXi host, would that encrypt the virtual guests and their data as well?

I'm guessing it won't, but the alternative is going to a physical environment, so I thought I would ask.

unable to connect to the mks: error connecting to /bin/vmx process

Hello,

i  know this problem seems to be common, but either there are no solutions available, or solutions are not applicable.

i will start with the hardware and software we are running esxi4 (latest patchlevel). The Problem is occuring on more than one blade,

but i will describe the scenario with one blade. (other blades do have about the same vm setup. hardware is the same)

we do not have any special resource / share configuration. all share,... settings are as on a fresh esxi installation.

Hardware:

   - BLC460 G1, 2 x xeon E5430, 16 gb ram 2 local sas disc, 4 nics (2 for network, 2 for nas)

   - NetApp Filer

The Datastores are mounted through NFS

VMs on the Blade:

- linux (4 gb ram, 2 cpus)

- linux (2 gb ram, 2cpus)

- linux (2 gb ram, 2cpus)

- Windows Server 2008R2 (4 gb ram, 2 cpus)

- all vms do have 4mb video ram (maybe this the problem?)

all vms do have 1 or more e1000 interfaces configured. some vms are migrated from physical machines. the win 2008 r2 server is a fresh installed 2 weeks ago.

we have no blade where we exceed our 8 core / 16 gb ram limit. it doesnt matter if windows 2003, 2008, 2008 R2,.. is running. all linux machines have no gui started. all running in run level 3. windows servers do have vmware tools installed.

now.. from time to time (sometimes after 10 days, sometimes after 2 months) we cant connect to the windows machines anymore. neither over console, nor over rdp. when trying with the vcenter console we get the message  "unable to connect to the mks: error connecting to /bin/vmx process". if this happens, all windows machines on the blade are affected. no pingable anymore, they are just dead. we cant shutdown the vms (stops at 95%). all we can do is reboot the whole esxi server.

sometimes this problem occurs:

any ideas?

Hi All,

I'm having problem with my Windows Server 2003 x86 VM, in the middle of installing IIS server, What I did is that i insert the CD into the ESXi host and then from

my VSphere client I point to use the host CD-ROM drive and it hangs,

What I've done:

1. Force restart the VM and it stuck in 95% of restart process.

2. in the SSL console of ESXi: services.sh restart

3. re-register the VM from datastore view into the VCenter (with the same name VMWS05) and it hangs with Status "In Progress", after 20+ minutes it came with the following error:

An error occurred while communicating with the remote host.

and the VM is not registered in the VCenter.

4. tried to kill the process like the following but still stuck ?

*     ~ # ps -ef | grep vmws05*

VpxClient crashes when trying to create a VM as a restricted user in a resource pool

$

The host is running ESXi 4.1.0 Build 721871 with vSphere Client 4.1.0 Build 491557. All of my users including myself use Windows 7 x64 Enterprise. What I am trying to do is grant a user his/her own resource pool (with permission to create vms) to limit cpu and memory usage without them having access to create VMs on the root of the host. When I grant permission like this when I logon as a regular user the vsphere client will crash everytime. If I grant the user the same permission on the host too it works just fine. Is there a way to fix this issue? I don't want the users to be able to create VM's on the root of the host because then we can't use a resource pool to manage them. I have attached screenshots with a memory dump. In addition, I cannot upgrade to ESXi 5.0 because the server has 64GB of RAM and 5.0 only supports 32GB ram without a license.

Hello!

Just installes SBS2011 on ESXi4 and after install in device manager there is still one driver missing for the (translated) basic system device.

The hardware-id is PCI\VEN_15AD&DEV_0740&SUBSYS_074015AD&REV_10

I think it's a pci device. But how to fix this? No driver is available via Windows Update.

Boot manager error 0xc0000225

I made and attempt to convert a virtual machine running windows server 2008 r2 over to the ESXi platform which has worked for many virtual machines up until this point. I ran the VMware converter from inside the VM and pointed it to the ESXi host. The conversion completed but upon starting it, I get a “boot manager error, 0xc0000225”. To troubleshoot so far I have tried running a chkdsk /f which did not solve anything, as well as running the startup recovery but it fails with the message below.

Root cause found:

Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem

Repair Action: System files integrity check  and repair

Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490

Is anyone encountering a similar issue or can anyone help me out on this?

ESXi 5 networking with x460 Extreme Network Switches

Does anyone have sample ESXi 5 and ExtremeXOS configurations for VLAN/LAG connectivity (CLI preferred)?

I have attempted to enable sharing on the switch stack but the connection to the ESX host dies.

All of the similar information, I found, is about ESX 3.

I have 4 connections to the switch stack (1 per switch)

Four tagged VLANs

The VLANs are trunked on each switch port

The goal is to have Load-Balancing across all four connections

Configure Network Management Grey Out

Hello All,

After I reset ESXi pw and it reset the server IP to 0.0.0.0 and when I login the Hypervisor or GUI, I noticed that the following item greyed out:

Configure Management Network

Restart Management Network

Test Management Network

Restart Standard Switch

And when I try to enable Management Network. I get this message "Enable Management Network error Management Network Interface cannot be found"

I checked the NIC on server has link/activity lights. And the logs show that NIC is up 1000Mbps. I looked in the BIOS and it show detect NIC card as well.

I search online and can't anything that can help me fix this.

Any helps would be appreciate!

Thanks,

Nice found, enumerated, but not showing up

Hey gang, somewhat of an odd duck problem here. I have 2 quad port ge ethernet adapters using the same chipset but one from Intel and one from HP.  my ESXi host sees them both, enumerates and names them, but I can only actually "see" one of the cards in vsphere.  As an example from my esx.conf

Here you can see all of the cards found

/device/003:00.0/vmkname = "vmnic1"

/device/003:00.1/vmkname = "vmnic2"

/device/004:00.0/vmkname = "vmnic3"

/device/008:00.1/vmkname = "vmnic8"

/device/009:00.0/owner = "vmkernel"

/device/010:03.0/vmkname = "vmnic0"

/device/010:03.1/vmkname = "vmnic11"

But here you can see only nic0 - 4 are made available, 5 - 8 are skipped entirely and then we pick back up with 11.

ESXi 4 Bootup Stuck on "iscsi_vmk loaded successfully"

Every time I reboot a host, it gets stuck on "iscsi_vmk loaded successfully" for about 10-15 minutes. The first couple of times, I've gotten impatient and powered off the host and rebooted thinking it's locked up. One time I let it go and it successfully completed the boot process. Now I'm thinking this is normal and the host's vmware iSCSI software initiator must be rescanning all my iSCSI datastores. Can anyone confirm this is what's taking place or do I have a potential problem here?

Cannot install VMware ESXi 4.1 "Unable to find the system image to install"

Downloaded ESXi 4.1 iso, burned to a CD, booted CD, go through screens, hit F11 to install.  Immediately get the following error:

-

Installation operation failed!

The installation operation has encountered a fatal error:

Unable to find system image to install.  This is due to the image not being mounted correctly or the CD-ROM not being supported.

-

The hardware is a homebuilt system with Intel DQ35JO board, latest BIOS, Intel E6850 CPU, 8GB RAM, 2 SATA drives.  I know this is not on the compatible list but is a "whitebox".  I've installed ESXi 3.5 on it in the past and gotten it up and running, and I've seen other success stories with this board/CPU.  Yes I enabled virtualization mode in the BIOS and powered down/up.

Here's what I've tried:

-- Redownload VMware-VMvisor-Installer-4.1.0-260247.x86_64.iso to make sure it wasn't corrupt (2 copies compared perfectly)

-- Tried a different CDROM drive (IDE)

-- Created a bootable USB stick using uNetBootin 4.7.1 and booted from it

-- Switched SATA setting in BIOS from AHCI to IDE

I keep getting the exact same error.  I've searched here and everywhere and find no reference to this error.

Help -- what do you all suggest for my next step?

hi,

we have some problems with a lun. each attemtpt to start a vm, which use this lun, ends with following exception:

Failed to open '/vmfs/volumes/4c5a5ebd-a904712c-0032-001517ce8e38/icg4aida/icg4aida-flat.vmdk' : Input/output error

or

Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4c5a5ebd-a904712c-0032-001517ce8e38/icg4aida/temp.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

is there a tool to check the lun and if yes repair it?

we tried to remove the lun and reattach it, but we can not remove it,because it is shown as busy.

there are also strange things when we want to view the storage in vcenter gui. in the vm we had the storage attached to (in the past) we can see it under the devices tab but not in the storage tab. On the other two servers we see the lun in both tabs.

we are using esxi4.1 on a intel modular server

hope you can follow my explainations and thanks in advance
